  • His body was discovered at bottom of rock wall above Verbier ski resort today
  • Valais police said he had died after plunging off a cliff at around 2pm yesterday 
  • Friends at the Verbier ski resort reported him missing after he did not return  

A 20-year-old American man died after going off-piste and plunging off a cliff in a Swiss ski resort, police have said.

His body was discovered by cantonal police in Valais yesterday morning after friends reported him missing when he did not return home.

The man had left the marked piste near Mont-Fort above the Verbier resort in the Four Valleys ski area at around 2pm.

He was found by rescue searchers at the bottom of a rock wall which was ‘several tens of metres’ high, according to local media reports.

Police are now investigating the incident. 

Verbier is the most famous ski resort in the Four Valleys area, with more than 250 miles of pistes across a number of skill levels.

It is also well-known for its apres ski and nightlife. 

Mont-Fort is the highest point in the area at 10,925ft.
