American travelling Down Under reveals her struggles with the local lingo in hilarious TikTok video

An American tourist has revealed the confusing encounters she has faced because she can’t translate Australian slang.

Florida woman Hailey Sulli has released a series of hilarious clips on TikTok detailing her struggles to understand local expressions Down Under, including the terms ‘travelling’, ‘getting p***ed’ and ‘f***ing oath’.

‘I was supposed to be going to Sydney the other day and my friend who was also going there to meet up with her friend said, “I’m going early in the morning, so I’ll just give you a ride”,’ Ms Sulli explains in one of the videos.

‘I was like, “Hell yeah, I don’t have to catch a train”.’

But 15 minutes before her friend was supposed to pick her up, she received a confusing text.

‘At around 7.45am she sent me a message saying, “How are ya travelling”.

Taking the question literally, Ms Sulli responded: “With you?”‘

‘But in my head I was like, “We have talked about me travelling with you.” What the heck, was she already there?

‘Then she arrives at the house and I hop in the car, and she’s like, “oh nah, it just means how ya going?”.’

Amused Aussies flocked to the comments section, with many surprised to learn the terms aren’t used in any other country.

‘I had no idea this was just Australian, we say this all the time,’ one woman wrote.

Another added: ‘I never realised how many things us Aussies say that don’t make sense to other nations.’

‘ I love this! It amazes me how our normal lingo is so confusing to visitors,’ a third comment read.

Others chimed in to offer additional interpretations of ‘travelling’.

‘It means “are you running on time”,’ one woman said.

Another said: ‘How are you travelling translates to ”how close are you to being ready”.

In an earlier video Ms Sulli described another baffling incident she had with her housemate.

‘Sometimes I can’t really understand my roommate’s slang words because I’m not from here,’ she said.

‘So my roommate walks into my room and he goes, “Ya wanna get f***ing pissed mate?”.

‘And I’m like, “What, no why? Why would I want to get angry?”

He laughed, asking if she was “already p***ed”, prompting her to say: ‘I’m not mad, should I be p***ed?’

Still perplexed, she whipped out her phone to Google the meaning.

‘Drunk, oh drunkkk,’ she laughed.

‘You can assume it has something to do with alcohol and you’ll be right 90 per cent of the time,’ one woman joked, while another said: ‘This sounds accurate as hell’.

Ms Sulli, who quit her job to travel the world, was in Australia when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Now finding herself in the country for an extended length of time, she has been documenting her stay – andracking up thousands of views on her videos.

In another video, the US woman, who goes under the name StraySulli on TikTok, asked Australians to clarify an unfamiliar expression.

‘Ok Australians, f***ing oath, explain that one to me,’ Ms Sulli said.

‘F**k what oath? What oath have you taken?’

Users jumped at the chance to help her decipher the statement.

‘It means I wholeheartedly agree with the statement that has just been said,’ a woman said.

‘Means damn straight I couldn’t agree more,’ a second wrote.
