America’s new sweethearts! Vice President Kamala Harris’ great-nieces become a viral sensation

History was made in America yesterday, when Kamala Harris became the first female vice president and first black woman and person of South Asian descent to hold the position – but it was her two young great-nieces who stole the show.

Four-year-old Amara and two-year-old Leela – the daughters of Ms Harris’ niece Meena – were snapped by their mother roaming the White House last night.

The cute duo, wearing matching outfits, giggled as they ran down the famous corridors and hid under tables in their great-aunt’s new office.

Meena, 36, a lawyer and children’s book author, shared the sweet videos to her Instagram page, which she has dedicated to her aunt’s campaign.

It’s already attracted nearly 215,000 likes, with dozens of fans leaving gushing comments.

Earlier in the day during the inauguration, the pair were spotted taking a selfie with their father, Nikolas Ajagu, while sitting next to former president Barack Obama.

Amara and Leela both wore faux fur plush leopard coats – custom made by iloveplum, a female-founded children’s wear startup in New York City, to match one their great aunt Kamala wore as a child in 1972.

Other images showed Amara waving at Ms Harris who then walked over to greet her great-niece. Harris is seen in the photo bending down to briefly chat with Amara while Leela was held by her father.

Following the inauguration, Meena shared another image of her daughters (left) wearing their cute coats. Meena also shared an image of the new vice president when she was just a child (right) and wearing a similar jacket

Meena’s husband Nikolas, who is the head of global partnerships at Facebook and was the founder of Barrel & Ink and Code & Canvas, also made headlines after he was spotted wearing the ultra rare Dior 1s.

The Dior 1s debuted last year at the retail price of $2,000, but are being sold on some sneaker resell sites for $10,000.

Later on in the ceremony the two young sisters were seen taking a nap in their parents’ arms.

Harvard graduate Meena is the daughter of the vice president’s younger sister, Maya Harris, who was also seen with the little girls throughout the ceremony.

Meena previously said that 56-year-old Kamala’s relationship with her two girls is one the former attorney general of California holds most dear.

‘My Aunt Kamala takes *very seriously* her role as a great aunt in helping to shape my daughters,’ she explained.

‘If she had her way, the girls (only 2 and 4 years old) would be on the campaign trail with her every day.’

A video shared by Meena in November of Ms Harris telling Amara she ‘could be president’ one day ‘but not right now [because] you have to be over the age of 35’ as she sat on her lap previously went viral.

In response, the ambitious four-year-old replied: ‘I know, I could be an astronaut president.’

Meena Harris (pictured with Amara and Leela), an attorney who recently released her first children’s book Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea, shared a sweet snap of her daughters on Tuesday with the caption: 'They’re screaming "INAUGURAAAATIONNNNN"'

Ms Harris doesn’t have children of her own but is stepmother to her husband Doug Emhoff’s children – Cole, 26, and Ella, 21.

She is also reportedly on great terms with their mother Kerstin Emhoff, Doug’s ex-wife, and has said being ‘Momala’ to them is a role that ‘means the most’ to her.

Kamala and Maya’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, immigrated from Chennai, India, to California as a teenager after refusing to participate in an arranged marriage.

She went on to become a breast cancer researcher and married Donald J. Harris, a Jamaican-American economist and professor whom she met through the civil rights movement.

Shyamala passed away from colon cancer in 2009, but left a lasting impact on her daughters and their family.

Kamala once said on Instagram: ‘Shyamala Harris was no more than five feet tall, but if you ever met her you would think she was seven feet tall. She had such spirit and tenacity and I’m thankful every day to have been raised by her.’

Maya fell pregnant with Meena at 17 but still went on to become a lawyer, public policy advocate and a TV commentator.

She also worked as an advisor during Hilary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, and more recently on Kamara’s as chairwoman.

The VP told Politico: ‘I think most people who know Maya will tell you she’s one of the smartest people they know.

‘The fact that she has volunteered to work on this campaign at such a high level and she’s exactly who she’s always been – she works around the clock and she’s probably the hardest, if not one of the hardest working people on the campaign – I feel very blessed.’
