Doctors are warning that the popular trend of receiving a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) can prove to be deadly – especially when women travel overseas to get a cheaper procedure.
Celebrities like rapper Cardi B have famously received the surgery, where a person has fat from their abdomen moved into their hips and buttocks to create and hourglass shape.
More than 61,000 butt implants were performed in the US in 2021, a 37 percent increase from the previous year. These figures do not include the many women who travel abroad to receive a BBL for a lower price.
It is known as the riskiest cosmetic procedure a person can undergo with one-in-every-3,000 patients dying from complications. These issues can strike at any time, with some not emerging until years later.
Cardi B recently revealed that she had 95 percent of her implants removed over concerns about her long term health, and warned fans against getting the procedure.

‘It’s an epidemic that’s actually getting worse as social media is becoming more popular,’ Dr Tansar Mir, a New York-based plastic surgeon told ABC.
These procedures are already dangerous when done by proper, licensed doctors in the US.
Known risks include fat embolization, where fat from the injection enters the blood stream and travels into the lungs or heart.
Women may also suffer a seroma, where fluid builds up underneath the site of a surgical incision and could become infected.
The risk of suffering these issues only increases when a person seeks out cheaper options in less-developed nations.
Improper sanitation can raise the risk of infections, and improperly trained or certified doctors are more likely to make errors that raise the risk of complications.
Even when done properly, recovery from a BBL can take months, and require a woman to avoid sitting down and to sleep on their side.
Many people opt for silicone butt implants, which give the same hour glass shape but could carry even more danger.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that these injectable silicon procedures can lead to severe complications or death.
Taryn Quinterri, from Arizona, told ABC that she is one of the women who elected to get these synthetic implants for her BBL.
After six months, she developed a rash on her butt cheeks. Once the first symptoms erupted, she said her fears of long-term complications began to grow.
Dr Mir warned that these issues develop as an auto-immune response, where the body detect the silicone as a foreign substance and attack it.
Other symptoms include fatigue, back pain, burning, itching and numbness.
In Ms Quinterri’s case, the symptoms came on relatively quickly, as Dr Mir warns that they may erupt decades after a person receives the injections sometimes.
Ms Quinterri was terrified. She feared the silicone would migrate into different parts of her body and kill her.
The woman even told her mother she may not be around to take care of her in old age because the procedure could kill her.
‘One of the people that specialize in silicone injection removals told me that what I had done to my body was worse than cancer,’ she said.
She travelled to Colombia to have Dr Alexander Ramirez Folleco to remove some of the injected material.
Ms Quinterri is now saving up money hoping to receive a second BBL removal procedure stateside.
Dr Folleco said that he sees around two or three Americans per week seeking to undo their BBL – as more-and-more women hope to undo the effects the trend had on their body.
One of those women is Cardi B, who revealed on Instagram Live that she had nearly all of her BBL implants removed.
‘In August I got surgery and I removed 95 percent of my biopolymers… if you don’t know what it is, it’s a** shots. It was a really crazy process,’ she said last week.
She then warned her followers not to go down the same route she did.
‘All I’m going to say is that if you’re young, if you’re 19, 20, 21, and sometimes you’re too skinny, and you be like “OMG I don’t have enough fat to put in my a**” so you result to a** shots, DON’T!’ warned the pinup known for her curves,’ she continued.
‘…when it comes to BBLs, if y’all want advice from me, before you get your BBL done you have to make sure your blood levels are all right.
‘If a doctor says your blood levels are too low or you have diabetes or whatever, don’t do it.’
