A neglected, 11-year-old Shih Tzu named Ellie May was given the shave of her life, when shelter workers in Omaha, Nebraska, cut a filthy shell of matted hair off the animal.

The incredible ‘stinking mass of hair’ covering Ellie Mae, as she is called, was so thick it was impenetrable, said workers who attended to the neglected pooch at the Nebraska Humane Society on Friday.

Elie Mae’s master had died and the dog had not been found until people had come to the owner’s home, reports Fox 42. 

The shelter suspects that the small dog had not been groomed in over a year. Once shaved, the matted hair weighed 9lbs, according to Fox 42. 

The hair was a blessing as well, in that it protected Ellie Mae from skin issues. However, once removed, workers discovered another problem: the dog's nails had grown seven-inches long

However, they shave also revealed that Ellie Mae’s nails had grown to an unbelievable 7-inches long, the shelter workers said.  

The dog also underwent surgery for an undisclosed ailment and was recovering well.

Humane society officials said Ellie Mae could have died within days if she wasn’t found.

After her canine makeover, Ellie Mae looked spunky and ready for a new home. 

The shelter reports that she already has one adoption offer.
