An electric blanket could save you £150 on gas bills over winter

Caould an electric blanket save you £150 on gas bills over winter – without putting a big dent in electricity costs?

Using an electric blanket could save you an average of £150 on gas bills over winter — without increasing your electricity costs, new research shows.

Blankets saved customers 20 per cent on their gas bills, and only increased electricity bills by 0.2 per cent, Octopus Energy reports.

This meant that customers managed to cut their energy bills by £148, on average, over three months of winter.

The provider handed out 34,000 free electric blankets to vulnerable customers between last December and March this year.

Electric blankets typically cost around £60, with some going for as little as £30, and can heat a person for just 3p to 4p an hour.

They are designed to be fitted to your mattress, underneath your sheet, to warm your bed.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, of Octopus Energy, says: ‘An electric blanket means you heat the human, not the home — staying warm for as little as 3p an hour.’
