Jockey has the bones in his leg nailed back together and his chest drained after suffering a horror fall when star hoop Hugh Bowman veered in front of him – and horse has to be euthanized

An Australian jockey who survived a horror fall underwent surgery to have bones in his leg nailed back together.
Andrew Adkins, 22, fell from Hot ‘N’ Hazy in the home straight of race 1 at Rosehill Gardens, in Sydney’s western suburbs, on Saturday.
The NSW jockey suffered fractured ribs, a fractured tibia and fibula – which needed be nailed back together – and a fractured clavicle which required plate fixation.
He also had to have his chest drained after his fractured ribs caused his lung to collapse.

Adkins (pictured) suffered fractured ribs, a fractured tibia and fibula, which needed be nailed back together, and a fractured clavicle which required plate fixation, he also had to have his chest drained after a lung collapsed
Racing NSW took to social media on Sunday to confirm the rising jockey’s surgery was a success.
‘Dr. Duckworth reports Andrew has come out of surgery at Westmead Hospital and everything went well,’ the statement read.
‘He had a rod put in his tibia and a plate on his clavicle.
‘He has also had a drain out in his chest due to a pneumothorax from his fractured ribs.’
Adkins will spend the next two days in a high dependency ward where he requires close monitoring before being transferred to a regular ward.
Meanwhile Hot ‘N’ Hazy, trained by Danny Williams, couldn’t be saved and had to be euthanised.
Mr Williams thanked supporters for their well wishes and described the horse as the best he had trained in 10 years.
Doctors said the surgery went as well as could be expected and Adkins (pictured) will now spend the next two days in a high dependency ward where he requires close monitoring
Footage of the race shows Adkins falling after fellow jockey Hugh Bowman, who was riding eventual winner Smart Image, moved away from the fence.
The two horses collided before Hot ‘N’ Hazy and Adkins went crashing under the rest of the field.
Racing fans took to Twitter suggesting Bowman, a champion jockey, should be heavily penalised for the accident.
Racing NSW stewards launched an inquiry into the fall and Bowman told them he didn’t think his move would put other riders in danger, The Daily Telegraph reported.
‘I endeavored to make a run to the outside of Glyn Schofield (Mr Colourful), which I had every right to and, in doing so, I was going to have to move Andrew slightly but I felt that I was able to do so,’ Bowman said.
‘There was a shift by the horse in front of me (Mr Colourful) and I was committed to the move that I made.

‘I felt at the time I made the call to go to the outside of Glyn I could do so without causing any interference to Andrew.’
Other jockeys who rushed to the scene described it as ‘carnage’.
‘The whole race was just carnage from start to finish,’ jockey Louise Day told Nine News.
‘Horses going everywhere.’
Adkins had only recently recovered from another serious fall at Randwick in 2019 before injuring his wrist at home later in the year.
A number of race fans took to social media to send their best wishes to the young jockey.
‘Wishing Andrew the very best for a good recovery,’ one fan wrote.
‘Wishing Andrew all the best,’ another added.
