He is one of Australia’s most respected television personalities.

And Andrew Denton has revealed despite his four-decade legacy as a presenter, he’s had difficulties getting celebrities to answer tougher questions during interviews.

The 57-year-old spoke with Hit105 breakfast show Stav, Abby & Matt on Thursday and described one especially awkward situation with Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Tough job: Andrew Denton has revealed despite his four-decade legacy as a presenter, he’s had difficulties getting celebrities to answer questions during interviews

Reflecting on his earlier ABC show Enough Rope, the Interview host recalled Chris had refused to talk about his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow or their daughter Apple.

‘We went back [to them] and said, “Look, we will ask some questions about Gwyneth and Apple, but they will be a small part of the interview”,’ he explained.

‘[We told them] we can’t not talk about his family. If he doesn’t want to do that, let’s not do the interview,’ he continued.

After back and forth exchanges, he confirmed Chris did do the interview and allowed the questions about his family to be included.

‘In the end he did come on and there were a couple questions [about Gwyneth and Apple] in a much longer interview,’ he offered.

‘Sometimes you have to stand your ground,’ he added.

A decade after his final episode of Enough Rope went to air, Andrew made his return to television last week with his new Interview series on Channel Seven.

The veteran broadcaster recently revealed his worst interview was with Hollywood actress Goldie Hawn.

‘Maybe she was having a bad day and it was via satellite, but she was so bad and so unpleasant we actually never even put it to air,’ he told 97.3FM’s Bianca, Terry & Bob.
