Presidential hopeful Andrew Yang appears to be gaining ground among the casual office-wear brigade after he was applauded on social media for showing up to the second Democratic debate without a tie.
However, his distinctly relaxed look has divided opinion in America with some supporting the tie-less appearance while others branded it ‘glib’ and called on him to dress appropriately.
The entrepreneur was the only male Democratic candidate to turn up without a tie in Detroit, Michigan, the second time he’s pulled the trick after also appearing in Miami without the office essential.
The published author, who has offered to give each American adult $1,000 a month if he becomes president, is vying with 25 others to be the democrat candidate for the race to the White House.

After his look drew criticism, the entrepreneur sought to capitalize on his tie-less appearance by selling it for $40 in a joke post on his presidential website
Praising his tie-less look, one social media user said: ‘Your intellect has my attention, not whether you wear a tie!’
While a second said, ‘Glad you didn’t let them intimidate you into wearing a tie.
‘It’s a new day and you’re a grown man fighting to make this country a better place – and they’re worried about a tie…’
Hooking onto the look, Andrew Yang tweeted his joke product of not wearing a tie.
‘For the American who cares more about financial security than my neckwear’, he tweeted as he launched the product.
The entrepreneur has sought to capitalize on his look by launching a mock product – selling the ‘exclusive’ no tie look for $40 online.
However, other twitter users were less than convinced about his more chilled appearance.
‘You don’t have to wear one every day,’ said one person. ‘But if I have to wear a bra, you can put on a tie. Get a damn tie!’
Another said the decision not to wear a tie was ‘glib’ because he claimed he didn’t need one to be a CEO of several companies.

In Thursday’s debate NBC anchor Brian Williams pointed out the missing tie.
‘Now Yang is blazing new ground here. No tie,’ he said before asking panelist Eugene Robinson, ‘Do you look at Mr Yang and say, ‘Would it kill you to throw on a tie?”
The democratic candidate, who has described Donald Trump as a symptom of the country’s economic transformation, said he wants to bring Americans a bright future.
As well as offering everyone more money, he has also said he wants to provide healthcare for everyone and human-centered capitalism.
