Andy Garcia has a hard time letting go in trailer for Father of the Bride remake

Andy Garcia, 66, stars as the traditional Cuban-America patriarch struggling to let go of ‘daddy’s little girl’ in the first trailer for the remake of Father of the Bride.

In a twist to the beloved Steven Martin version of the story, Garcia and his on-screen wife, Gloria Estefan, 64, are hiding their impending divorce while planning their daughter’s surprise nuptials.

Garcia gushed over his ‘chemistry’ with Estefan, whom he has been friends with for years, in an interview with People on Monday.

Down the aisle: Andy Garcia, 66, stars as the traditional Cuban-America patriarch struggling to let go of ‘daddy’s little girl’ in the first trailer for the remake of Father of the Bride co-starring Gloria Estefan

In this latest remake, Garcia steps into the role of the father of the bride who struggles to come to terms with his daughter, Sophie, played by Adria Arjona, becoming a wife.

‘Fathers play a big role in their daughter’s life. It’s a special bond that only they share,’ Garcia says to open the trailer. ‘Even when she’s all grown up, she is still daddy’s little girl.’

Much like the 1991 version of the film, the family is seated around the dinner table when Sophie reveals (surprise!) she is getting married.

‘And I proposed,’ she informs the shocked room.

Flabbergast, her father responds: ‘You proposed? You proposed to him? He didn’t propose to you? Can you do that? Does anyone do that?’

The reboot features a twist to the 90s storyline with the parents of the bride hiding their divorce from the family or risk ruining the wedding.

The trailer sees the couple in therapy and later laying out ground rules on how to fake it at the reception.

Hand holding and dancing is okay, Gloria says but kissing is a hard no.

‘We all know Gloria’s talents and as a recording artist and as a composer and as a writer,’ Garcia told People.

‘She’s an extraordinary woman, but I knew her talents as an actress, and she obviously has been dipping her feet in the acting world for quite some time.’

‘I was just looking forward to spending the time with her and bringing our own personal relationship to the forefront, and it was very easy to have obviously chemistry with her and we felt very comfortable with one another,’ he adds.

‘The thing I fretted about the most was that I had to kiss Andy because he is my friend and his wife is my friend,’ Gloria told People.

Adding: ‘I’ve never kissed another man in the last 46 years or 47 of my life. But you know it wasn’t me kissing him. It was Ingrid, his wife in the movie, and it all felt very natural, and it was great.’

Mexico native Gaz Alazraki, who directed Club de Cuervos, has been tapped to helm the feature, which is being produced by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B, the production company behind the Oscar-nominated drama film, Minari.

This is the latest reboot in the franchise, which first began with Spencer Tracey and Elizabeth Taylor in the roles of the father and bride for the 1950 film of the same name and the 1951 sequel, Father’s Little Dividend.

It would be revived in 1991 with Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams in the leading titular roles, which also included the 1995 sequel, Father Of The Bride Part II, and  mini-second sequel titled Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish) that dropped on Netflix’s official YouTube and Facebook in 2020.

According to Deadline, the new remake will be more of a romantic-comedy than previous versions of film, and that it will be more in the vein of the original Spencer Tracy led film.

Estefan and Garcia previously worked together in the 2000 biological made-for-television drama film, For Love Or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, which chronicled the famed Cuban jazz musician.

The Conga singer’s acting resume also includes playing the mother of the late Naya Rivera’s character’s mom in Glee (2012, 2015), and Mirtha in season three of the Netflix reimagined series One Day At A Time (2017).
