Animal liberation activists storm dolphin display at Spanish marine theme park

This is the moment a group of animal liberation activists today stormed a dolphin display.

Members of the Vegan Strike Group, an international organisation who claims to fight animal enslavement, disrupted the daily show at Loro Parque, Tenerife.

Photographs showed the activists swimming into the pool waving around posters calling for the closure of the animal park.

Workers at the side of the arena could be seen calming down dolphins that were in the water ready for their show.

Security officers could be seen jumping into the pool and escorting the campaigners from the premises.

Last month, travel operator Thomas Cook announced it would stop selling trips to animal parks that kept killer whales.

As such, it planned to cut ties with Loro Parque from next summer after ‘customer feedback and consultation with animal rights experts’.

Writing on Facebook after the display, the Vegan Strike Group said: ‘For the fourth time our Vegan Strike Group activists have disrupted a dolphin show on Spanish soil.

A statement from the group said: 'The Policia Nacional came to have a look, but Ronny, Renate and Peter were NOT taken to the police station.

'We did not receive a fine and we were able to leave the park through the staff exit'

‘This was the fourteenth time we took action for the dolphins and the sea lions since the foundation of the Vegan Strike Group.

‘Loro Parque, the infamous dolphin park on Tenerife was our battle scene today. This park was already on our wish list for a long time.

‘Even though we, as animal lovers, have to leave the sea creatures in a chlorine bath, we are very satisfied with this successful action.’

The statement continued: ‘The Policia Nacional came to have a look, but Ronny, Renate and Peter were NOT taken to the police station.

‘We did not receive a fine and we were able to leave the park through the staff exit.’

Loro Parque has been contacted for comment.
