Anna Wintour unashamedly dodged a question about Melania Trump in a new interview, deftly turning talk to former first lady Michelle Obama instead.
Appearing on The Economist’s podcast, the 69-year-old Vogue editor was asked her opinion of the outfits the current first lady, 49, sported during a visit to the UK last month — but Anna avoided the question by quickly shifting the conversation to focus on Michelle, 55.
‘I think First Lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible in every decision she made about fashion,’ she said in response to the question from British journalist Anne McElvoy.

In interview clip, Anne asked Anna to comment of Melania’s fashion choices during a recent trip to the UK with her husband.
The journalist pointed out that there is ‘something so visual about the Trumps’ before referencing President Donald Trump’s ‘ill fitting suits’ and ‘strange trousers.’
She went on to talk about Melania during her trip, before asking for Anna’s opinion on her fashion choices.
The presenter said: ‘Melania put together in a much more put-together way. She did come to the UK and, I think, very consciously wanted to see herself as an ambassador for British fashion, in this case, or a transatlantic ambassador.
‘I mean, do you value that? Or would you just rather stay away from the Trumps?’ she asked.
In response, Anna avoided answering the question or addressing Mrs. Trump at all, instead saying: ‘Well I think First Lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible in every decision she made about fashion.

‘She supported young American designers. She supported designers, indeed, from all over the world.
‘She was the best ambassador that this country could possibly have in many ways, obviously, way beyond fashion,’ she added, before the interviewer gently interrupted.
‘But she’s not the First Lady now, so what about the one you’ve got now?’ Anne asked.
Completely ignoring the interviewer’s question, Anna said: ‘And to me, she is the example that I admire.’
The journalist went on to ask Anna if she would offer Donald Trump fashion advice if he called her.
‘I think he is unlikely to call,’ she said in response.

The interview caught the attention of thousands of Twitter users, many of whom have praised Anna for her handling of the questions.
One Twitter user said: ‘Anna Wintour showing us how to respond to questions about the current flotus… talk and remind the world what an incredible first lady Michelle Obama was. Love it.’
Another said: ‘The shade in this interview is thick! They wanted Anna to acknowledge Melania and Anna was like NAH.’
One woman said Anna ‘did what was proper and that is, if u [sic] don’t have anything nice to say then don’t speak on it.’
‘Speak on the topic that u [sic] can send positive vibes,’ she added.
Another said Anna’s response was ‘the definition of grace.’ and added that the Vogue editor is ‘the baddest.’

It isn’t the first time the fashion mogul has distanced herself from the Trumps, and Melania in particular.
In a CNN interview back in April, British journalist Christiane Amanpour asked the fashion-lover why she features more Democratic politicians than Republican ones.
In response, Anna said: ‘If you’re talking about the first lady [Michelle Obama] or Senator [Kamala] Harris, obviously these are women that we feel are icons and inspiring to women from a global perspective.
‘I also feel even more strongly now that this is not a time to try — and I think one has to be fair, one has to look at all sides — but I don’t think it’s a moment not to take a stand.
‘I think you can’t be everything to everybody and I think it’s a time that we live in a world, as you would well know, of fake news … [and] those of us that work at Conde Nast believe that you have to stand up for what you believe in and you have to take a point of view,’ she added.
She also hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election.
