ANZ Bank is facing criticism after a branch sign was spotted directing customers to scan a QR code to view the opening hours, instead of simply displaying the information on the sign itself.

A frustrated passer-by snapped a picture and shared it to social media, calling out the bank for making something simple unnecessarily difficult.

‘Whatever happened to have a simple sign detailing opening hours? Now I have to scan a QR code and look up the branch on the website,’ they said.

Many Aussies agreed and slammed the bank for not being able to provide a simple, but important piece of information to its customers, particularly its elderly members who may not know how to scan a QR code.

‘It just irks me how uncaring to the older demographic the big banks are,’ one said.

‘Great for elderly folk, you know the ones that actually go inside banks the most,’ another said.

Despite the outrage, ANZ has defended the change as a way to keep customers informed with up-to-date details about branches opening times.

‘ANZ introduced QR codes so customers can access the most up to date information about our trading hours,’ a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

‘From time to time we may change our branch opening hours, as we wish to ensure our staff can be available when they’re needed most.

‘We understand the importance of accessibility and our branch staff are here to help all members of our community to access the services they need.’

Many Aussies online still just wanted communication the old fashioned way.

‘Technology has made things so unnecessarily complicated. Just give me a sign,’ one person said.
