  • Apple rolled out its Apple Watch connected program to certain gyms in the US
  • Gyms are offering incentives for tracking  their workouts via an Apple Watch
  • Gym-goers can be given gift cards, credits towards their membership and more

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is getting in shape, but Apple released a new Apple Watch program that adds some incentives.

Called Apple Watch Connected, gyms are using the feature to reward users for tracking workouts and hitting goals.

Launch partners include Basecamp Fitness, Orange Theory, YMCA and Crunch Fitness – all of which have their own perks for members.

Some of the locations are giving customers money off their membership, gift cards and even an Apple Watch Series 5 GPS model after participating in a certain number of classes.

Crunch Signature CEO Keith Worts said during a press briefing at a Crunch Fitness gym this week: ‘I’m confident this will help member retention and keep members active and engaged.’

He also noted that users must opt-in to the program and Crunch ‘complies with ever privacy law there is,’ CNBC reported.

Crunch is offer members $3 to $4 in credit per week for reaching certain fitness goals.

Basecamp is set to launch Apple Watch Connected to all of its clubs over the next year and is offering members the ability to pay off a new Apple Watch for hitting the gym.

THE GYM PERKS

  • Crunch: Offering $3 to $4 in weekly credit if you meet certain goals.
  •  Orange Theory: Giving members gift cards to Apple and Nike
  •  Basecamp Fitness: Offering an Apple Watch Series 5 GPS model that you can pay off by participating in three classes a week for an entire year.
  • YMCA: Workouts will go toward providing free classes for children, like swim lessons.

The YMCA, which is iving away free classes for children as an incentive, will start with its greater Twin Cities locations this week followed by 22 additional branches in the coming weeks and Crunch Fitness is launching Apple Watch Connected in two Manhattan gyms this week with more coming.

And Orange Theory will let all of its members into the program sometimes this year – two of its locations in Manhattan already offer it.

Members that stick to their workout plan will be rewarded with Apple and Nike gift cards.

Apple is also asking gym partners to offer its GymKit, which can be connected to gym equipment in order to let users track their workouts while using certain machines such as a treadmill and elliptical.

‘When your workout is over, your data is saved to your Apple Watch and required to be removed from the gym equipment,’ Apple explains on its website.

‘However, the manufacturer may collect and retain data about your workout that is synced to the equipment from your Apple Watch if you have logged into the gym equipment.’
