Apple’s Tim Cook picked up $90m in shares today

The CEO of tech giant Apple collected hundreds of thousands of shares worth $89.2 million this week.

Documents show that Tim Cook received the bonus as his firm’s stock did better than 81 per cent of its competitors on the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index over the last three years. 

The huge payout comes as new Apple products like the Apple Watch and AirPods wireless earphones do better than expected.

According to calculations by Business Insider, Cook will take home $43 million after paying taxes on his 560,000-share bonanza. 

Sales of the Apple Watch have begun to rise after a less than stellar two years on the shelves. 

It sold 3.4 million of the devices during the last quarter, snatching 49.6 per cent of the market and dominating its rivals. 

The firm has also moved into TV in a bid to compete with Netflix and Amazon. 

It has reportedly spent $1 billion on the development of news shows.

AirPods, meanwhile, have accounted for 85 per cent of sales in the wireless earbud market this year.

And there has also been a buzz around the next major Apple product – the interactive speaker named HomePod, which will directly compete with Amazon’s Echo.

Speaking earlier this year, Cook said that sales from the Apple Watch, Beats headphones and AirPods amount to a Fortune 500 company when added together.
