Candela, who has some 75 buildings to his credit, was a Sicilian American architect who immigrated to New York in the early 1900s.

He started his career in the 1920s and went on to make a permanent name for himself when he became the architect of choice for builders of luxury apartments.

His first major commission was for an apartment house at West 92nd Street and Broadway in 1922.

A year later, he received his first commission for an East Side apartment at 1105 Park Avenue.

And during the next five years, Candela designed a number of residential buildings on the Upper West Side, primarily on West End Avenue and Riverside Drive.
