Male celebrities may be pros at making fans swoon with their looks on the red carpet – but often look decidedly more causal when they’re off duty.
Stars like Timothée Chalamet and Harry Styles may be known for their daring fashion choices.
But snaps shared on their Instagram accounts and fan sightings have revealed that when they are left to their own devices, the stars tend to be much more relaxed.
It raises the question of how much influence they really have over their outfits – and how much they are helped by Hollywood stylists like Erin Walsh and Harry Lambert.
Speaking to FEMAIL, stylist Rochelle White explained when it comes to their daily life, celebs will often leave behind their highly curated look and throw whatever they feel comfortable with.
Is your favourite male celebrity a fashion icon? Or do they just work with very talented stylists? Pictured: Harr Styles at the Don’t Worry Darling red carpet during the Venice Film Festival last September
She explained: ‘When it comes to events the stylist and teams these celebrities have around them want them to be at the forefront of fashion and style and take risks with their looks.’
But she added that the direction of the styling can be down to the celebrities themselves, especially if they are known for a defined look.
She said: ‘Celebs like Harry Styles and Timothée Chalamet like to have a clear and defined style when it comes to events and red carpets.
‘They know that paps will be about and they will want to put their best foot forward and show up.’
She added: ‘When it comes to day-to-day, I feel they want to be comfortable, relaxed and maybe just themselves.
They might not have the fashionistas eye, so just rock the looks and styles that they know.’
Here FEMAIL reveals the VERY different styles of male celebrities when they are on – and off – duty.
Timothée Chalamet
FROM ‘TAILORED’ RED CARPET LOOKS TO SKATER BOY STYLE
Timothée Chalamet is no stranger to causing a sensation on the red carpet with his carefully curated looks – but away from the cameras, he tends to have a much more casual style
Chalamet caused a stir at the Venice International Film Festival last September when he stepped out in a backless top from Haider Ackermann
Timothée Chalamet is no stranger to causing a sensation on the red carpet with his carefully curated looks.
He caused a stir at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Bones and All last September when he showed up in a monochromatic backless top and matching trousers from Haider Ackermann.
The actor has been opened about his keen interest in fashion, with his Little Women co-star Florence Pugh telling Elle magazine that he picked all of his outfits himself.
However, according to the New York Times, the Dune actor’s fashion credentials are due to his collaboration with the stylist Erin Walsh, who also works with stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Anne Hathaway.
Meanwhile he also has a Louis Vuitton endorsement, providing him with some of the best designer pieces to choose from.
Rochelle said: ‘He has such a tailored look and he’s not afraid to take risks with the items and colours when it comes to red carpets.’
But when he is off duty, the Call Me By Your Name star has been known to put comfort over style.
Several snaps shared on his Instagram account show that the actor will favour tracksuits and beanies or sweatshirts while out and about.
Rochelle said she would qualify Chalamet’s look as ‘casual luxe sport and skaterboy.’
‘I feel as he’s from New York, his look is a reflection of how he grew up and what he would wear when chilling with his friends.’
Leonardo DiCaprio
FROM ‘CLASSIC’ SUITS TO ‘YOUTHFUL’ OFF DUTY LOOKS
On the red carpet, Leonardo DiCaprio will don well cut suits that are age appropriate (left). However Rochelle noted he doesn’t appear to have a well-defined sense of style in his everyday life (right)
The heartthrob to end all heartthrobs, Leonardo DiCaprio never looks better than when he is wearing a finely tailored suit from Giorgio Armani, his trusted go-to brand for the award season.
These age appropriate suits strengthen his position as part of the Hollywood elite and swoon-worthy eyecandy.
But off screen, Leo’s style is far more casual, with the Romeo+Juliet star often papped wearing relaxed jeans with shapeless tops and baseball caps.
Speaking of the actor’s ‘timeless’ style, Giorgio Armani told GQ: ‘I have dressed him on many occasions, on the red carpet but also on set.
‘I like the relaxed and natural way in which he wears my clothes, his nonchalant style.
‘He has a spontaneous and masculine allure, on set or off, whether he is wearing formalwear or a T-shirt with jeans,’ the designer added.
Meanwhile Rochelle suggested his off-duty style could be non-descript – and dependent on whom he is dating at the time.
She explained: ‘Leo is known for his casual look outside of the glitz and glam of red carpets and Hollywood, usually with people thinking he dresses too young for his age.
‘It could be down to the girlfriends he has at the time that determine his style,’ she added.
But the stylist noted that the actor knows what to wear on the red carpet to keep his clout intact in Hollywood.
‘He has a very classic well tailored look when it comes to suits which are what some might say age appropriate and stylish,’ Rochelle said.
Brad Pitt
FROM TRENDY-LED OUTFITS TO ‘DISHEVELLED’ STYLE

The star made headlines when he showed up in a skirt from Haans Nicholas Mott at the Bullet Train Berlin premiere last July
Like DiCaprio, Brad Pitt is another Hollywood heavyweight who is not afraid of going casual on his time off.
On the red carpet, the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood’s lead has learned to make the trends work for him.
The star, who was once dubbed an ‘unkempt hippie dude’ by ABC News, has been linked to several talented stylists throughout his career.
But the star had a bit of a middle-aged makeover in 2022 for the promo of Bullet Train, where he dared to wear new colours, loose fits, and stray from the fashion beaten paths.
He began working with stylist and private-label designer Haans Nicholas Mott to mix up his looks.
He told GQ: ‘I love working with Mr Pitt because he has a clear sense of how he wants to be in the world and we make work in that space, i.e. Mr Pitt proposing an espresso linen skirt to go with the linen jacket…
‘His sense of color / fit / texture / pattern is utterly nuanced and genuinely special.’
His appearance at the Berlin premiere last Spring, where he wore a skirt from Mott, was hailed by many as a stand-out fashion moment.
Elsewhere, he wore trendy, show-stopping pieces like oversized and colourful suits from the Addidas x Gucci collaboration.
Meanwhile he also wore a skirt from Mott’s own label, paired with a linen shirt and combat boots.
At the time, he was hailed by some as ‘Bohemian Brad’, with The Evening Standard noting the star was entering a new style era.
But while he’s been turning looks on the red carpet, Pitt has remained faithful to more casual look inspirations, with mixed results.
‘When it comes to Brad Pitt his look can sometimes come across as dishevelled with bohemian inspiration thrown in,’ Rochelle noted.
‘He tends to rock a lot of oversized t-shirts and baggy trousers, maybe glasses and cap a really relaxed and comfortable look,’ she added.
Harry Styles
FROM RISKY ENSEMBLES TO ‘HOME-COMFIES’
Harry Styles has gone from boyband member to style icon for many, and often receives praise for his bold outfits on stage (left) and on the red carpet (right)
Harry Styles has gone from boyband member to style icon for many.
The singer was dubbed a ‘fashion icon’ by Rolling Stone due to his gender fluid approach to style, and especially thanks to his friendship with former Gucci creative Director Alessandro Michele.
A longtime Gucci ambassador, Styles has appeared in several campaigns for Michele, and the designer has repaid the favour by dressing Harry Styles for the majority of his red carpets.
His friendship with Michele dates back to his One Direction days, where Styles would sport floral flared suits from the designer’s formative collection for the Italian fashion house, while his bandmates stuck to safer outfits.
For the 2019 Met Gala, Harry also strutted his stuff with Michele in a lacy black jumpsuit with kitten heels.
And the fashion house has provided several of the singer’s stage outfits, dressing him for the Brit Awards last year as well as the Grammys, Coachella 2022 and securing him with a colourful and well-tailored touring wardrobe as well.
The Sign Of The Times singer donned retro, colourful outfits throughout his ‘Fine Line’ album campaign, before switching to bright and vibrant garments for his Harry’s House album campaign.
The eye-catching looks are oft put together by his stylist Harry Lambert, who tends to dress the singer in ‘British, eccentric’ outfits.
Speaking about his outfit, Harry told Vogue.com: ‘This is Harry’s first Grammys, and so we wanted to do something that felt British and eccentric.
‘A little bit rock ‘n’ roll and a little bit camp. I hope we did this with the mix of the tweed and the boa, [which is] Britishness, rock’n’roll, and camp all rolled into one.’
Lambert said: ‘It was also important to us all that the silhouette for the stage was the same as the red carpet but that the actual looks felt polar opposites.
‘One being patterned and vibrant and the other being more slick and sexy.’
Rochelle said Harry has his pick of the finest stylists – who often know exactly how to style the star to emphasise his best features.
The stylist explained: ‘I feel that any stylist that Harry works with knows how to frame his body and best features.
‘They also know that they can take risks when it comes to patterns and textures.’
However, the highly curated looks Styles dons onstage could not be more different than what he wears when no one is looking.
Away from the limelight, the singer looks like any other guy, in jeans and tracksuits.
During a sighting in London with his girlfriend Olivia Wilde in 2022, Styles was seen wearing a pair of ripped bleached jeans with an ill-fitting blue jacket thrown over a large white t-shirt and a pair of Vans.
On another occasion, the star was spotted donning a puffer jacket from North Face with a pair of tracksuit bottoms and large shades.
Rochelle commented: ‘His day-to-day look that is oversized, casual, relaxed and dare I say home comfies.’
Adrien Brody
FROM SLEEK RED CARPET TO LAIDBACK NEW YORKER
On the red carpet, Adrien Brody has cultivated a retro allure with finely tailored chinos, boat shoes and tight shirts, with sunglasses and slick hairdos (pictured, left in Venice in September). However his day-to-day style appears to be significantly more relaxed (right)
On the red carpet, Adrien Brody has cultivated a retro allure with finely tailored chinos, boat shoes and tight shirts, with sunglasses and slick hairdos.
He is even a designer for the Swiss luxury fashion house Bally.
But Dutch TikTok user Laura Gommons pointed out how different the longtime collaborator of Wes Anderson looks when he is left to style himself.
She said; ‘This man only looks good when he’s styled by a stylist that knows what they are doing.
‘But all that beauty washes away so quickly when he left to his own devices
She went on to show a number of different pictures of the actor on the red carpet and in snaps he has posed on social media.
Rochelle agreed, saying: ‘When it comes to Adrien’s style on the red carpet it is more smart casual but well tailored.
‘He has a look that is trendy and usually eye-catching with patterns or colour.’
Despite this, Rochelle appeared alittle more critical of Adrien’s relaxed style.
She said: ‘His day to day style is not as put together. It consists of more oversized pieces, trainers, tees and beanies.
‘Very different from his sleek red carpet look,’ she added.
‘His look when casual really does play homage to his laidback nature, hometown of New York and hip hop culture,’ the stylist added.
Robert Pattinson
FROM RELAXED TO STUDENT-LIKE STYLE
Robert Pattinson is not afraid to showcase a more alternative sense of style with his red carpet picks (left, in a white suit). However when out and about with his girlfriend Suki Waterhouse, left, Robert has often opted for tracksuit bottoms and a white tee
The actor raised eyebrow when he showed up at the Dior menswear show in a shimmery skirt and faux-fur jacket during Paris Fashion Week in January
Robert Pattinson is not afraid to showcase a more alternative sense of style with his red carpet picks.
The Twilight alum often experiments with his style, even wearing a shimmery skirt with a faux-fur zipped bomber jacket at the Dior Homme Menswear Fall-Winter 2023-2024 show during Paris Fashion Week last January.
He has also served plenty of swoon worthy looks, with GQ writing how he ‘set the standard for dressing in your 30s’ in 2022.
But when he’s not on set or rubbing elbows with other fashionable souls at Fashion Week, Robet’s wardrobe is much more fuss-free and relaxed.
Rochelle commented: ‘I feel with him again his style is very relaxed and not as put together.
‘Usually consisting of oversized tees, jeans and hats. His style on the red carpet is well out together.’
She continued: ‘He kind of gives off skaterboy, wearing items that don’t fit his body shape, but give off a more oversized feel.
On red carpets, his style is better put together with a mix of trend and classic pieces.
But the stylist commented the actor on the fact that his less curated looks still fit with Pattinson’s artistic vibes, saying: ‘His look is sleek and muted.
‘His casual look can come across as a bit student-like when not on the red carpet.
‘He tends to wear a lot of hats, jumpers and glasses which gives off student living,’ she added.
