Aretha Franklin’s Detroit mansion sells for $300,000

A historic Detroit mansion owned by late singing legend Aretha Franklin has been sold.

According to public records, the 5,600-square-foot brick home adjacent to the Detroit Golf Club fetched $300,000 in a sale last month. It was built in 1927.

The Queen of Soul bought the home in 1993, but nearly lost it in 2008 due to more than $19,000 in unpaid property taxes, according to the Detroit News.

Franklin estate personal representative Sabrina Garrett-Owens said ‘there are no other Detroit properties’ that were owned by Franklin.

It’s unclear who the new owner of the home is, but they also purchased an empty half-acre lot next to the property.

The mansion features five bedrooms, six bathrooms and three fireplaces. It also has a three-car garage.

Franklin also has a 4,148-square-foot Colonial-style house in suburban Detroit’s Bloomfield Township which is still listed for $800,000.

The five-bedroom home outside Detroit is where Franklin lived for two decades and went on sale last month.

She lived in the brick mansion from the late 1990s until she moved to a downtown Detroit condominium building during the last year of her life.

Franklin, who grew up singing in her father’s Detroit church and used her explosive voice to power such songs as Respect and A Natural Woman, died on August 16 of pancreatic cancer after a legendary six-decade career. She was 76.

Her two-story home, which features a marble-floored kitchen and a sauna, is located in a gated community in Bloomfield Township.

The suburb was identified by Bloomberg as the most expensive real estate market in the Midwestern state of Michigan.

Franklin bought the home in 1997 for $1.2million, according to The Detroit News.

The musical icon died without leaving a will to specify what should happen to her estimated $80million estate, according to media reports.

Her four adult sons are expected to be the heirs.

Julien’s Auctions plans to sell more than 30 of Franklin’s dresses at auction in New York in November.

The outfits were expected to fetch up to $4,000 each.
