Ariarne Titmus’ dad Steve shows enthusiastic support for his daughter at Commonwealth Games

The father of a teenage swim star has been hailed a ‘national treasure’ for his display of raw emotion as he watched his daughter come agonisingly close to glory at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Steve Titmus was caught on camera passionately cheering his 17-year-old daughter Ariarne as she claimed silver during the women’s 200m freestyle final on Thursday night.

‘Go! Turn! Faster! Push off that wall! Go! Keep going! Faster, faster, go, go, go!’, Mr Titmus was heard screaming as he rose to his feet in the stands.

The enthusiastic father thought the Brisbane schoolgirl had won gold when she touched the wall, but she fell just 0.04 seconds behind 17-year-old Taylor Ruck, from Canada.

‘We thought she bloody got there. The angle we were sitting we thought she got there. She was powering home,’ Mr Titmus later told The Courier-Mail.

‘We’re enormously proud. She swum a tremendous PB. It was a magic moment… I’m a fairly extroverted person so I think if you’re going to cheer you’ve got to have a full crack at it.’

Mr Titmus won over the internet with his impassioned display.

‘Did anyone else tear up as they watched Steve Titmus cheer for his superstar daughter?,’ one asked on social media.

‘That was fantastic television watching… Steve Titmus cheering on his daughter Ariarne to her silver medal! Great stuff. Give the man a Logie!,’ another said.

Yet another added: ‘Steve Titmus is a national treasure.’

Australia won a total of five golds – all in swimming and cycling – and 15 medals overall on Thursday on the opening day of competition on the Gold Coast.
