A man has been taken to hospital after he was shot by police at a Sydney train station.

Paramedics were called to Campbelltown train station, in Sydney’s west, at 2.45pm on Wednesday.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was speaking with officers when he drew a knife and allegedly lunged at them.

He was tasered but continued trying to threaten police, and was eventually shot.

Three ambulance crews and one medical team attended the scene, where they treated a man for a gunshot wound to the stomach area.  

Witnesses at the scene claimed they saw a police officer holding a gun shortly before the man was shot.

He is currently on the way to Liverpool Hospital, a NSW Ambulance spokesman told Daily Mail Australia. 

Officers have cordoned off the area and remain on the scene.  

The incident occurred just outside the train station in the bus interchange. 

Buses in and out of the area have been diverted to avoid the scene, Transport NSW confirmed.

People travelling via bus in the region are being advised that buses will not be stopping or picking people up from the Campbelltown station bus interchange, and will now be stopping on the other side of the road.

Trains have not yet been affected by the shooting.

A school student named Emma called in to 2GB radio station after witnessing the incident.

She said some of her schoolmates ‘were crying because they saw it’. 

‘There’s people everywhere. Schoolkids are stranded,’ she said.

She said she was told to get off the bus in the middle of another street and was unsure how she was going to get home. 

Police are not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident, and no police or other members of the public were injured.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
