Nine migrants, including two children, are missing after a group of armed men kidnapped them from a hotel in the northern Mexico border town of Ciudad Juárez, the Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office said.

Four assailants barged into the San Miguel Hotel on Wednesday around 6pm and forced the migrants out of their rooms and into one of their two SUVs.

The suspects broke down several doors and destroyed surveillance camera cables before they were able to escape.

The Attorney General’s Office confirmed seven of the migrants are Ecuadorian nationals and two are from Guatemala.

It also been said officials had initiated a search and rescue mission composed of municipal, state and federal police officers.

Surveillance camera footage helped authorities both vehicles that were used by the armed men to carry out the kidnapping.

Authorities recovered a red Chevrolet Tahoe the suspects use near a housing development four miles away from the San Miguel Hotel.

A second vehicle, a black Chevrolet Tahoe, was also found abandoned about six miles from the hotel.

Abductions of migrants who cross through Mexico in their journey to reach the United States are not uncommon. Gangs and cartels survey crossing points and charge migrants fees to cross the border and kidnap them for ransom.
