Arsenal struck a potentially decisive blow in the race for the Premier League top four as they beat Manchester United 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners moved above north London rivals Tottenham into fourth – for a few hours at least – as they dented United’s chances of Champions League qualification.

Nuno Tavares was on hand to tap home his first goal for Arsenal just three minutes into the contest, after David de Gea pushed out Bukayo Saka’s shot.

Saka then doubled the advantage with a perfectly-placed penalty after Eddie Nketiah had seen his goal disallowed in the build-up just after Saka was adjudged to have been fouled by Alex Telles.

United halved the deficit as Cristiano Ronaldo turned home a Telles cross before half-time but they spurned the chance to equalise as Bruno Fernandes rolled a tame penalty against the post.

And Granit Xhaka made them pay with a rocket shot from 30 yards to make it 3-1 and clinch the points.
