Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere dealt more injury woes at Chelsea

  • Wilshere captained Arsene Wenger’s side in their Carabao Cup clash at Chelsea
  • The 26-year-old was forced off with an injury after 60 minutes on Wednesday

Jack Wilshere limped off during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The 26-year-old was handed the captain’s armband for the tie at Stamford Bridge – which ended in a goalless stalemate – but after he went to ground holding his right ankle, the England international was forced off shortly before 60 minutes had been played.

Wilshere, who was sidelined with a fractured leg in April while on loan at Bournemouth, had managed to reignite his Arsenal career this season after breaking into Arsene Wenger’s Premier League side, but he will hope this injury is not as serious as his last.

Wilshere has endured a career riddled with injury spells, having fractured his ankle in 2011 followed by numerous setbacks which included more ankle damage as well as a broken fibula in 2015.

Wilshere’s temporary spell on the south coast saw him play in 26 Premier League games for Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth before his most recent injury blow until Wednesday.

Wilshere returned to Wenger’s squad this season being reduced to only Europa League appearances, but forced himself back into his top-flight squad in October and has featured in Arsenal’s last seven league outings.
