England resume day four of the fourth Ashes Test in a strong position thanks to Alastair Cook’s magnificent unbeaten 244.

The opening batsman resumes at the MCG crease alongside James Anderson, on 0, as England look to increase their 164-run advantage over Australia.

After surrendering the old urn by losing the first three Tests of the five-match series, Joe Root’s side are playing for pride.

And it was Cook who headed into the match under notable pressure. He had made only 83 runs before the match in Melbourne, raising questions over his future in the England team.

He hit back with his 32nd century of a distinguished career.

Australia will be chomping at the bit to get back out in the middle to make inroads in this now sizeable England lead as quickly as possible.

David Warner, Australia’s century-maker in the first innings, will look to continue his form while skipper Steve Smith will hope to pile on more runs amid a hugely impressive series.
