England’s objective is to dismiss Steve Smith as quickly as possible and restrict Australia’s lead on the fourth day at Edgbaston.
Having established a useful lead of 90 thanks to an excellent rearguard action between Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad, England then removed three of the Aussie openers after tea.
David Warner fell for just eight as he was once again dismissed by Broad, before Cameron Bancroft was snared by Moeen Ali.
Smith and Usman Khawaja put on 48 for the third wicket before Ben Stokes claimed a crucial breakthrough to remove Khawaja for 40.
But Smith, despite taking a whack on the helmet from a Stokes short ball, batted through with Travis Head until bad light curtailed play half an hour before the scheduled close.
It means Australia are effectively 34 for three entering a fourth day that could well be interrupted by the weather.
