Ashley Portas gives proposal tips to make your girlfriend say yes

Planning a proposal can be one of the more nerve-wracking experiences a man faces in his lifetime.

The importance of getting it just right is obvious, but some men struggle to work out a balance between authentic and cheesy.

In a bid to sift through some of that confusion, diamond merchant Ashley Portas has provided FEMAIL with his top five tips for getting it right and walking away with a yes.

‘I have sold thousands of engagement rings. Along with these engagement rings I have also seen hundreds of men that need a helping hand planning a proposal,’ Ashley said.

‘Finding the ring is what starts it all but it’s the combination of the ring and the proposal you’ll remember forever.’

Hire a photographer to capture the moment that she says ‘I do’

I personally think this one would have to be the most important tip of all. When I got engaged I planned an elaborate proposal filled with a weekend getaway, champagne and rose petals.

The only thing I didn’t nail was capturing the moment she said yes. All I have is a grainy iPhone photo that did not do the moment justice.

Your proposal should be about you as a couple

Don’t follow the ‘cookie cutter’ proposal: be different and unique.

That doesn’t mean you should do it while skydiving, but instead your proposal should encompass the two of you as a couple and should fit in with who you are and your relationship with one another.

Pick somewhere sentimental

Go somewhere that was important or significant in your relationship. Where you first met, had your first date or where you first said ‘I love you’.

Whether it is an engagement party, champagne with close friends or a celebration with family, have something planned to mark and celebrate the moment

Plan the celebration after the proposal

Will she like being proposed to in public?

Whether you are planning to propose in front of family, friends or strangers… watch YouTube videos and think if she will like being proposed to in public or if she will hate it before you go ahead with a public proposal.
