Aston Martin’s first ever motor bike, expected to be priced from around £100,000 and capable of speeds up to new 186mph, has been photographed during testing trials.
Roaring around a race-track in France, the strictly limited edition ‘AMB 001’ track-only superbike is the creation of British luxury sports car-maker and the re-born legendary bike maker Brough Superior, once dubbed the ‘Rolls-Royce of motor-cycles’.
Only 100 Aston Martin and Brough Superior will be made – combining the dynamism and heroism of First World War desert hero Lawrence of Arabia with the derring-do of Aston-favourite super-spy James Bond.

With a price of €108,000 – so around £98,000 in the UK, inclusive of VAT – all AMB 001s are being hand-assembled in the Brough Superior factory in Toulouse with first deliveries from autumn this year. The collectors’ bikes aim to combine elegance, beauty and power.
Wearing a light disguise on the track only, the new bike boasts a turbo-charged output of 180 horsepower promising an incredible engine response’ with huge amounts of pulling-power torque in a wide range of engine rpm.
This is also the first time that a Brough Superior model is presented with a V-twin turbo-charged engine.
Aston Martin said: ’Prototype testing is one of the most vital parts of the development process with a test motorcycle allowing the team to validate the chassis geometry, the ergonomics and dynamic behaviour.
‘In the same way that Aston Martin’s vehicle dynamics engineers can ‘read’ a car, Brough Superior’s test rider feeds back on all areas of performance, from the overall dynamic feel of the bike to details regarding cornering, braking, acceleration and the like.’
Aston Martin bosses added: ‘The AMB 001 by Aston Martin and Brough Superior took to the track at Pau-Arnos in France recently to begin its comprehensive testing programme.

‘Adorned in the traditional Aston Martin Camo livery, the AMB 001 test mule completed its first test at Pau-Arnos.’
It comes after debt-laden Aston Martin Lagonda, with headquarters in Gaydon Warwickshire and a new factory at St Athan in Wales, has endured a months of turmoil and a £536million bail-out by Canadian businessman and new executive chairman Lawrence Stroll who oversaw the firm’s refinancing and restructuring, and the replacement of former CEO Andy Palmer by incoming chief executive Tobias Moers.
It is currently gearing up to launch this Autumn its new DBX sports utility vehicle – the first SUV it has ever made.
Aston Martin executive vice president and chief creative officer, Marek Reichman said: ‘Everybody involved has managed to make tremendous progress with the development of AMB 001, despite the challenges we have all been facing.
‘This special motorcycle is, like our road cars, the result of beautiful design melding with modern technology to produce a bike that any collector will be proud of. We are delighted to see how much progress has been made, both on and off track and look forward to the moment when production starts for this stunning machine.’

Brough Superior chief executive Thierry Henriette said: ‘One of the key design features of the AMB 001 is an aluminium fin that runs along the full length of a carbon fibre tank, passing under the saddle and out onto the rear.’
‘The body holding the fin and supporting the saddle is one of the areas where we called on the unique knowledge of Mecano ID, who joined the project to apply specialist aerospace-quality carbon fibre skills to the exclusive AMB 001.’
The new carbon-fibre AMB 001 made its worldwide debut at EICMA, the Milan Motorcycle Show late last year.
Design inspiration was taken from the new series of mid-engined Aston Martin cars.
The aim was to create ‘a unique, modern, lightweight and powerful sports bike concept, boasting exclusive technical features, including a chassis configuration with a double wishbone front fork and structural carbon fibre body’.
The new bike is in the traditional Aston Martin Racing colours of Stirling Green and Lime Essence with Matte Black wheels, forks and brake assemblies.
It also features a combination of paint and bare carbon fibre that accentuates the lines.
All of the components have been specially designed using the best processes and materials, including carbon fibre, titanium and billet aluminium.

Every component on the motorcycle is of the highest specification and will be one of the most expensive production sportsbike made. That title is currently held by the MotoGP-derived Honda RC213V-S, which (at launch) cost €188,000 (around £170,000) new
There are lots of nods back to Aston Martin cars, too.
The bike boasts a strong, sculptural body form accented by a carbon fibre fin. The design of the fin is derived from the side strake on Aston Martin cars. It runs along the full length of the Stirling Green tank, passing under the saddle and out onto the rear, creating a flowing form along the top of the bike.
A spokesman said: ’As the fin passes under the saddle it can be seen through breaks in the Oxford Tan leather pads of the hand-stitched saddle, which combines old techniques and modern technology in one swooping area that is a perfect fit for the human form.’
Aerodynamic wings attached to the cowl on the front of the bike take their direction from the ‘S-Curve‘ which provide downforce on the front of an Aston Martin.
Ultra-lightweight Aston Martin wings sit under the lacquer of the bodywork on the nose and the tank, and are the same nine-micron stainless steel wings that adorn the Aston Martin Valkyrie.
Brough Superior might be building in France, but it is a very British brand…
Brough Superior Motorcycles was founded in Nottingham in 1919, by George Brough.
The Brough Superior was considered the fastest, best-looking, most expensive brand to be ridden by thrill-seeking record-breakers and ‘gentleman riders’ from the roaring twenties with a reputation as the ‘Rolls-Royce of motor-cycles’. Its most famous fan was T.E Lawrence – ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ who owned seven.

After all his death-defying exploits in war, TE Lawrence died six days after a motorcycle accident near his Dorset home in May 1935 when just 46-years-old. He had been pitched over the top of his Brough Superior SS100 and suffered severe head injuries when reportedly manoeuvring to avoid two boys on bicycles ahead.
He had named his bike, capable of 100mph speeds. ‘Boa’ or ‘Boanerges’ meaning ‘Son of Thunder’ in Aramaic.
In a twist, one of the medics who attended Lawrence, a young doctor called Hugh Cairns who became one of Britain’s first neuro-surgeons and whose research into bike crashes helped pave the way for the use of crash helmets.
