Aston Villa suspended chief executive Keith Wyness on Tuesday afternoon.

It read: ‘Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Chief Executive, Keith Wyness, has been suspended by the club with immediate effect.

‘Owner and Chairman, Dr Tony Xia will assume the role until further notice.

‘There will be no further comment from the club at this time.’

Wyness was suspended after the club failed to make a regular tax payment on Friday.

Villa say they are working with HMRC and will clear up the issue within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Villa are facing large cost-cutting measures following their failed promotion bid.

Owner Xia has admitted that the club faces ‘severe Financial Fair Play challenges’.

The club have already begun taken measures to reduce their outgoings this summer by releasing £60,000-a-week captain John Terry, while star man Jack Grealish is also likely to be sold.
