Astrology experts reveal what you should and shouldn’t do during Mercury in retrograde

Mercury is currently in retrograde for the third time this year, with astrology experts claiming it could be to blame for things going drastically wrong.

Mercury retrograde, which is a time when the planet appears to travel backwards rather than forwards, began on September 9 and it will continue until October 2.

From problems with technology to relationship disasters, the period is believed by some to cause havoc.

Now, astrology experts have told FEMAIL what can be expected – and what should be avoided.

Delay signing contracts

During the Mercury in retrograde, experts advised avoiding putting pen to paper when it comes to big decisions.

Celebrity psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigman explained: ‘It’s best to delay signing of new contracts, filling in job applications and completing on a house.

Think before you speak

Psychic medium Chris Riley said Britons may need to be aware that sometimes things can be ‘misunderstood and misinterpreted,’ especially when it comes to our relationships.

He said: ‘Sometimes “we or they” say things that aren’t necessarily meant, so be careful to only say what you truly mean, speak from the heart and be honest but compassionate in emotional situations.

‘We need to be careful with these things as Mercury retrograde can heighten emotions, make things feel more intense and we may then do or say something we regret after a time when we feel more balanced and calm in ourselves, the Mercury retrograde can affect us emotionally.’

When it comes to communication, Harriet added: ‘I recommend really thinking about your voice and how you use it so that people really understand what you’re trying to say and you can avoid any arguments or confrontation.’

‘The retrograde period only lasts about three weeks, so if you can put things off – do.

‘Even if things could turn out just fine, it’s not worth taking the risk of autocorrect changing your new job description from barber to baker.’

Don’t rely on technology

Wellbeing practitioner Harriet said it’s common to see more problems with your electronic devices, revealing: ‘During retrogrades, we often see technology playing up more than usual – phones freezing, social media crashes, lost passwords etc.

‘As technology is a huge part of modern-day communication, we tend to find our reliance on it is tested.’

Inbaal agreed, revealing: ‘Anything and everything around communication can go awry.

‘We live in a digital world, so our wi-fi going down is just one small fault, but it impacts everything in the house.

‘Booking cinema tickets for the wrong day.

‘Calling your partner by your ex’s name. Everything is communication and a lot is at risk.’

She added that some ‘safe activities’ include going on a silent walk, a pub crawl, baking or yoga.

Air signs should be careful

When it comes to who might be most at risk of things going wrong, Chris warned that certain star signs will be more impacted than others.

‘We are currently in a Mercury retrograde which started on September 9 where this retrograde began in Libra, so air signs have been most affected this month, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius,’ he said.

‘The air signs are associated with friendship, harmony and romance, so we can expect to see more passion in our connections, but we can also see things come to the surface, and some things we may not necessarily expect.

‘We may see one or two surprises in a relationship sense, and maybe some things we have to deal with that we just didn’t expect to.’

Chris added: ‘Mercury retrograde is a good time to focus inward, focus on ourselves, self-care, self-love, and do anything that we haven’t had time to do.

Don’t panic

The most important thing is to stay calm, with Harriet saying: ‘In reality, we can’t suddenly stop life happening whenever a planet goes into retrograde.

‘If you have to make a big decision, sign a contract, or do meet the love of your life during this time, don’t panic.

‘Don’t let fear affect your choices. Use this time to be more mindful and tread more lightly. Double check things, read things through more times than usual, and explain things with even greater clarity or detail than perhaps you normally would.

‘If you include more mindfulness into each day, you will sail through these times more smoothly, and whatever you want to move forwards at this time, still can.’

‘Maybe it’s a time to revisit something you’ve been holding off from doing, or something you just haven’t finished.

‘It’s also a time to reflect on some of our own behaviours, especially when it comes to relationships, and a time when we may be reflecting on the past and with that sometimes we find closure and peace in some situations.’

Time for self-reflection

While it may be a worrying time for some, it’s also a good time for some self-love, explained Chris.

‘Mercury retrograde is a good time to focus inward, focus on ourselves, self-care, self-love, and do anything that we haven’t had time to do,’ he explains.

Harriet added: ‘Retrogrades are a powerful time for self-reflection. This is a great time for inner work and self-care.

‘Make sure that you are kind towards yourself as you move through these few weeks. Often past memories, people and connections re-surface. Each of these situations, when presented to us, offer a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the ways you’ve grown and changed, or have a look at anything from your past that still needs some healing or forgiveness.

‘Make time for yourself and use this as a window of time to gather any heaviness, outdated beliefs, or themes from your past, and choose to leave them behind you for good.’

Mercury in retrograde explained

Harriet said: ‘When Mercury is in retrograde, the planet slows down its orbit. From our position in the cosmos, it looks as though the planet is moving backwards in our skies – but in reality, it has simply slowed down.

‘When any planet is in retrograde, it symbolically calls for us to slow down too. It’s a time for introspection, reflection and releasing. As Mercury represents the planet of communication, it often represents a time for us to reflect on our relationships with others, our personal boundaries, and internally release any attachments to things that perhaps we’ve been holding onto, but we know no longer serve us.’

Inbaal also explained: ‘Because Mercury is the planet of communication, we believe that all matters relating to communication are likely to go a bit haywire during the period of Mercury retrograde.

‘Emails go to the wrong person, contracts are printed with harmful errors, words spoken kindly are taken the wrong way, and phones are more likely to drop and break.

‘If this sounds ludicrous, cast your mind back to the great Facebook outage of October 4, 2021, when Instagram, Whatsapp and Facebook all stopped working for six hours, effecting over 3.5 billion users. That was during Mercury in retrograde.’
