One person has died and 15 are injured after a gas explosion in North Carolina. 

The explosion happened Durham in a building which collapsed after the blast. 

No other details have emerged but emergency services are still working at the scene and transporting people to the hospital. 

The incident happened in an area of downtown Durham which is mostly occupied by restaurants and businesses. 

The building is sandwiched between a coffee shop and a Mexican restaurant. 

It is not clear what it is currently being used for but in the past it has operated as a Porsche garage.  

The City of Durham said in a tweet that the explosion was the result of a gas leak. It has closed the roads surrounding the site.
