Athletes walk out of ‘dull’ Commonwealth Games ceremony

The Commonwealth Games’ closing ceremony has left many people disappointed and feeling Australia could have done better – including the athletes.

Basketball players Jenna O’Hea and Alice Kunek were among sport stars to leave Gold Coast’s Carrara Stadium part-way through to go back to their rooms.

‘We’re going back to the village, it’s a bit boring,’ Kunek said, news.com.au reports.

The ceremony was widely criticised for being underwhelming and having a bizarre list of performances.

Many felt as though they were watching an Australian Idol reunion tour, while others slammed early singers for being out-of-tune.

Some thought the country’s Indigenous population was over-represented, and several claimed Yothu Yindi’s performance of ‘Treaty’ was inappropriate.

They were followed by child who recited an interesting poem for the crowd.

Australian stars including Anthony Callea, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Guy Sebastian were next to take the stage – along with a large group of ‘everyday heroes’.

Several viewers took to Twitter to point out the common theme among performers closing the Games – they were all mostly former Australian Idol contestants.

‘Nice of Commonwealth Games to launch the Australian Idol reunion tour,’ someone tweeted.

‘Am I watching the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony or Australian Idol? Clearly Australia is starved of any non-reality show ‘talent’,’ another added.

Earlier, Channel Seven was slammed for not showing the start of the closing ceremony.

Fans blasted the network for showing reality cooking program, My Kitchen Rules, instead of the massive finale of the 11-day event.

‘Channel Seven currently running a ‘countdown to the closing ceremony’…which has already started #GC2018,’ someone wrote on Twitter .
