Atlassian founders take top spot on AFR’s Young Rich List

The co-founders of software company Atlassian have topped the Australian Financial Review’s Young Rich List for the sixth year in a row with a combined wealth of $6.08billion.

Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, both 37, have jointly taken the number one spot on the list a record six times.

Their combined total wealth as of 2017 is more than 10 times the next two people on the list – another technology duo, Dave Greiner, 39, and Ben Richardson, 38.

They have amassed $607million as the co-founders of Sydney web marketing services company Campaign Monitor.

The top five is rounded out with Melbourne property developer Tim Gurner, 35, with $465million.

Gurner hit the headlines in May after slamming millennials for their excessive spending, saying many young Australians would struggle to buy a home if they were ‘spending $40 a day on smashed avocados and coffees.’

The only woman to make the top 10 is Cyan Ta’eed, 36, who occupies the ninth and 10th spots with her husband Collis, 38.

Model Miranda Kerr has $44million to take the number 62 spot

The couple, co-founders of online graphic marketplace Envato, have a combined wealth of $216million.

The 100 people who make up the 2017 list have enjoyed an impressive increase in wealth thanks to a booming property sector, technology market and beauty industry which has boosted overall wealth to a record $13.2billion, up from $12.3billion last year.

Technology is still the dominant sector for the year – with 38 people from the field making the list – followed by financial services with 12 and retail, with eight.

The year saw 27 new people make the list – including fitness and health star Emily Skye, 32, at number 83 with $32million and Airtasker co-founders Tim Fung, 34, and Jonathan Lui, 33, at numbers 66 and 67 with $41million combined.

The youngest new entries are the co-founders of HiSmile – Nik Mirkovic, 22, and Alex Tomic, 24 – at 58 and 59 with a combined wealth of $46million.

The Gold Coast entrepreneurs started their teeth whitening company just two years ago, but have gone on to find global recognition since with social media brand ambassadors including Kendall and Kylie Jenner.

Meanwhile, fitness guru Kayla Itsines, 26, jumped 11 places up to take the number 40 spot with a shared wealth of $40million with business partner Tobi Pearce, 35.

Model Miranda Kerr, 34, lagged a little further behind with $44million to take the number 62 spot.

They are among only nine women who made the list – including 30-year-old Canva CEO Melanie Perkins at number 17 with $128million.

The AFR’s Young Rich List has recorded Australia’s wealthiest self-made citizens under the age of 40 since 2003.
