  • Thousands packed two-by-two into a sports stadium in Colombo, the country’s capital, for the record attempt
  • But long queues in the 32-degree heat and sunshine meant many twins left before the end, it is reported
  • Current record was set in Taiwan in 1999 where  3,961 twins, 37 triplets and four quadruplets gathered

A world record attempt for the most twins in the same place could fail after ‘too many’ turned up, leaving organisers struggling to verify all the birth certificates in time.

Thousands packed two-by-two into a sports stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, yesterday causing huge queues in the 32-degree Celsius heat and sunshine.

Many twins, which had come wearing matching clothes, reportedly left before they had all been counted and no group photo was taken, which is usually required for these events.

The previous record was set in Taiwan in 1999 when 3,961 sets of twins, 37 triplets and four quadruplets gathered outside the City Hall in Taipei.

Upuli Gamage, co-organiser of the event with her twin Chamali, told the crowd, according to ABC, that they were ‘confident we will be informed in writing that we hold the record’.

There has not been a comment from the Guinness World Records organisation on whether the event has made the requirement to set a new world record.

The attempt appears to have failed after twins reportedly left while organisers struggled to verify all birth certificates at a sports stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the record attempt took place. (Pictured are twin dancers at the event)
