The ultimate holiday stuff-up: Australian’s Eastern Europe holiday surprise for his friend goes wrong due to similar-sounding cities – and they realise far too late
- Aussie man booked the wrong flights for surprise trip
- He bought tickets for Bucharest instead of Budapest
- Traveler decided to make light of the travel mishap
An Australian man who planned a surprise holiday with a female friend has been humiliated online after he mistakenly booked flights to the wrong country.
Sophie Alice was delighted when Ben Kennedy flew halfway around the world to visit her and then announced he had booked them a bonus trip last weekend.
Ben had intended to whisk Sophie away to the Hungarian capital Budapest but mistakenly bought tickets to the similarly named Romanian capital Bucharest – almost 900km away.
The pair decided to make the best of the situation, producing a TikTok video captioned: ‘When you thought you had booked flights to Budapest’.
In the video, which has received over four million views, Sophie is seen standing on the tarmac about to board a RyanAir plane to Romania.

The camera zooms into a boarding sign displaying their alternate destination as the pair repeatedly mouth the word s*** with the voiceover.
Asked repeatedly online whether they went ahead with the trip, Sophie answered: ‘Yes we went, of course we went, it was great.’
‘It was amazing, I’ve got a lot of videos to show from Romania so follow along and you’ll see. But yeah, absolutely brilliant, loved it.’

Among the highlights that Sophie shared online were a trip to the Bran Castle – often referred to as Dracula’s Castle – in Transylvania, eating some delicious food and attending a concert.
Many commenters said inadvertently going to Bucharest instead of Budapest was a good mistake to make.
‘Honestly, Bucharest is nicer than Budapest,’ one said.
‘Budapest is overrated and nobody speaks any english,’ another agreed.
‘Bucharest is one of the wildest party places totally underrated,’ a third said.
Others said they knew people who had made similar travel mistakes with sound-alike destinations.
‘Me and my boyfriend went to Budapest last year, he was flying one day before me and he lost his flight for the same reason. He queued for Bucharest,’ she wrote.
‘My ma near did this. Trying to buy flights to San Diego in California and near ended up in Santiago, Chile,’ another wrote.

‘That happened to us on Valentines Day, sat waiting for Budapest in the Bucharest line. We never got away,’ a third commented.
‘Lol… my husband thought he booked a flight to the Bahamas and after two hours discovered he was going to Bermuda instead! You are not alone!’ a fourth wrote.
The mishap comes just weeks after a New York man made the mistake of booking a flight to Sidney, Montana instead of Sydney, Australia.
Kingsley Burnett had chosen to fly to the airport with code SDY instead of SYD.
‘I saw the little plane with like 9 passengers and wondered ‘how is that going to get me to Australia,’ he told The New York Post.
‘That was when I caught onto the mistake I made.’
