Aussie ex-husband of accused murderer breaks his silence

The American woman who brutally murdered her heavily pregnant neighbour and then kidnapped her baby is ‘obsessed with serial killers’, her Aussie former husband revealed.

Brooke Lynn Crews, 38, was charged over the death of Savanna Greywind, 22, in North Dakota on August 19.

She then allegedly took her healthy newborn daughter Haisley Jo home and told her partner William Hoehn that the infant was theirs and saying, ‘This is our family.’

The state of the young woman’s body, which was later found in a Minnesota River, showed signs of ‘homicidal violence’, and Greywind’s baby was then found at the apartment of Crews and Hoehn.

Experts had previously said it was possible that the young mother was the victim of womb raiders, people who cut babies out of pregnant women to steal them.

Before Ms Greywind’s death, Crews relocated to Australia to marry a Blue Mountains man she had met on a dating site.

Andrew Murray, a Katoomba chef, told news.com.au that she moved to New South Wales in February 2012 after they ‘hit it off online’ – but the couple only last six months.

Their relationship began to fall apart when he discovered that Crews had lied about her past, including the fact she had children and had been married before: ‘It was all lies, it was all based on lies’.

Crews repeatedly lied to the unsuspecting Mr Murray, saying that she had lost a baby in 2011, and that she couldn’t have any children because of a traumatic miscarriage.

‘I didn’t know she was married in America, didn’t know she had children and then it all started coming out,’ he told the news site. ‘And I said, ‘Look, I want you to go home and be a mother to your kids’.’

Mr Murray also revealed that Crews was ‘obsessed’ with true crime, studying psychology and nursing and did her thesis on serial killers.

‘She was always reading books on serial killers and murders and could tell you anything about them,’ he added.

Crews then began threatening her husband, telling him that the police were after him and threatening to hurt him.

But Mr Murray called her bluff; ‘I walked in [to the police station] and said, ‘I understand you want to speak to me.’ I gave them my licence [because] I had nothing to hide.’

The officer he spoke to denied that they were investigating him, so he began to look into her past and discovering more lies and falsified documents. She became aggressive when confronted,

Mr Murray said that he severed ties with her after she left for America – ‘once she got back to America she just seemed to get really nasty’ – and annulled their marriage.

He was utterly shocked when he read online about the murder charges.

‘I just couldn’t believe it to be honest. I had voiced my concerns about her mental state … but wasn’t expecting that.

‘It sort of shocked me to the bone. It’s been five years and I’d shut a lot of things out, but a lot of stuff has come back now.’

Mr Murray added that what allegedly happen could have been avoided – he had alerted police in North Dakota of her previous illegal and deceptive actions, citing concerns about her mental state, but ‘they just didn’t care’.

Haisley Jo is being taken care of at a medical facility, and it is expected that custody will be awarded to her father – Ms Greywind’s boyfriend Ashton Matheny, 21.
