Aussie gold medal-winning skateboarder’s hilarious reaction to Raygun routine: ‘I saw those videos dude, that was pretty funny’

  • Keegan Palmer loved Raygun’s routine at Paris Olympics
  • Skateboarder praised her for ‘having fun’ as a breakdancer
  • Gold Coast based Palmer, 21, won gold in park skating

As infamous Australian Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn – AKA Raygun – continues to polarise sports fans, she has a fan in dual gold medallist Keegan Palmer.

The Gold Coast skateboarder – who won gold in Paris to back up his triumph at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, praised the university professor for enjoying herself on the ultimate stage.

‘I saw those videos, that was pretty funny,’ Palmer said. ‘(It was) pretty interesting, who cares really.

‘She’s out there having fun, that’s all that really matters.’

Gunn, 36, failed to score a point in any of her three bouts – and her bizarre routine became an instant talking point.

While the likes of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Socceroo Craig Foster praised Raygun for ‘having a crack’ at the Games, she has been widely criticised in other quarters.

Many of Gunn’s fellow Aussie Olympians had her back, and she was treated like a cult hero at the closing ceremony in Paris.

Video footage soon emerged of Gunn showing off her iconic moves to huge ovation from her Australian teammates.

Gunn lost all three of her round-robin battles by a combined score of 54-0 and admitted post-event that she couldn’t compete athletically with the tricks and spins of her younger opponents.

Australian Chef de Mission Anna Meares slammed ‘keyboard warriors’ for their online bullying of Raygun, whose routine was compared by some fans to the mockumentary by comedian Chris Lilley.

‘What I wanted to do was come out and do something new and different and creative – that’s my strength, my creativity,’ Gunn said.

In unforgettable scenes, Gunn hopped like a kangaroo, yawned at an opponent and performed the sprinkler.

Gunn works at Sydney’s Macquarie University as a creative arts researcher specialising in ‘the cultural politics of breakdancing’, and also has a PhD in the sport.

Meanwhile, fans hoping to see Raygun at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will be disappointed after it was confirmed the sport was dropped from the schedule.

The decision was made before the Paris Games, and Gunn was one of several breakers to criticise the move.

‘It was disappointing it was decided that it wouldn’t be in LA, particularly before we even had a chance to show it,’ she said.

‘That was possibly a little premature. I wonder if they’re kicking themselves now?’

‘Breaking is clearly athletic, it requires a whole level of dedication across a number of different aspects. It’s really bringing a new level of excitement.’
