A prestigious Melbourne school has confirmed reports a 12-year-old girl was approached by a man in a black car.

The driver reportedly approached the Caulfield Grammar School student as she waited at a Glen Iris bus stop during his commute to school on Wednesday.

The man asked the 12-year-old to get in his car but she refused.

Meg Adem, the school’s deputy principal and head of the Caulfield campus, confirmed the incident to parents at 2pm on Wednesday.

‘The incident involved a student who was approached by a driver in a black vehicle as they were travelling to school,’ she wrote.

‘The student refused. We have met with and supported the student involved and their family, and the matter has been referred to police.

‘It is a timely reminder to have proactive conversations with students, and our children, about how they respond to unexpected encounters.

‘We ask that students are vigilant when catching public transport and walking to and from school.’

Pru-Ellen Petsinis, deputy principal and head of the Malvern campus, said teachers had facilitated age-appropriate discussions regarding ‘unexpected encounters’.

‘Classes talked about being vigilant when catching public transport, walking to and from school and to always travel in groups,’ she said in the statement.

‘We will revise our No, Go, Tell strategy… this approach is used consistently in our junior school.’

Fees at Caulfield Grammar School, one of Melbourne’s biggest private schools, range between $23,205 for Prep and $38,865 for Year 12.

Victoria Police have confirmed a police report about the incident has been filed.

Six separate incidents, believed to have been abduction attempts, rocked Melbourne at the end of 2024.

Four children, aged between 10 and 15, were the reported targets of men driving white vans in Tullamarine, Blackburn, Doncaster, and Boronia since November 18.

The incidents are not believed to be linked. Another man allegedly approached two other sixth grade students in December as they were walking home from school.
