  • A notorious bucket list must-see, it can often be thought of as expensive
  • But there are a collection of options that make it more budget friendly

An Australian travelling couple has explained exactly how they managed to stay on an island in the Maldives for $100 a night, with the same crystal clear water and relaxing outdoor activities offered to them as those who choose a five-star resort.

James and Alex are the married couple behind the YouTube channel Twosome Travellers, sharing snippets of their adventures abroad – and Down Under – with their almost 130,000 social media followers.

To start their budget trip the pair chose to fly to Thulusdhoo, a small island which is 27km north-east of the country’s capital of Malé.

It can be reached on a 30 minute speed boat that costs approximately $43AUD per person each way with a choice of four different departure times offered throughout the day.

The local ferry is also an option for just $4 but it will take 90 minutes to get there.

‘Like many of the islands in the Maldives this place is surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters and has the iconic white sandy beaches,’ James said.

It’s home to a population of 1,400 people and is most famous for its surf breaks, called ‘Cokes’ and ‘Chickens’.

‘One of the most special experiences we had while staying at Akiri was going out to a sandbank not too far away from the island… literally in the middle of nowhere,’ James said.

The pair saw dolphins on their trip to the sandbank and spent the day frolicking in the surrounding turquoise water.

There are some important aspects about the Maldives to realise before you travel.

Firstly, it’s a Muslim country, so there are certain beaches on the islands where bikinis are allowed to be worn, and ones that women need to wear one pieces on.

There is also no alcohol served on Thulusdhoo and it’s illegal to bring it onto the island.
