Australia heatwave: Cities get hottest week in 54 years

A huge mass of hot air is sweeping across Australia and bringing temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s to every major city – the start of what could be one of the hottest Decembers on record.

The trough is making its way from the nation’s north-west down to the south-eastern states, giving people of all states a taste of the sweltering heat.

Sydney will see the mercury soaring through the 30s by mid-week, as will Melbourne, while Adelaide could potentially sweat through a 43C day on Wednesday.

After a slow start to the season including freezing cold nights, hail and torrential rain, summer has finally arrived in Australia, as the an intense heatwave makes its way across the continent. 

Melbourne is set for the most violent swing, with a potential maximum of 36C on Wednesday registering 12C higher than any December day so far and the Victorian capital’s hottest day since February.

Sydney is seeing steady increases throughout the week, with Monday’s top of 26C rising to 29C on Tuesday and pushing the mid-to-high 30s by Thursday.

Southerly winds are likely to keep the coastal cities relatively in check, but regional areas will be sweating through temperatures in excess of 40C.

Even Tasmania and the ACT are getting in on the act, with Hobart to enjoy temperatures pushing 30C despite the average this time of year sitting at just 20C.

Canberra will be participating in the summer party, as the Australian capital could get as hot as the mid-30s.

Weatherzone told Daily Mail Australia the city will be sitting above 30 degrees for the next seven days, the first time this has happened since 1963. 

The city will peak around 33C on Thursday, seven degrees higher than the average.

Regional areas of Victoria and South Australia will see minimum temperatures of 30C throughout the week.

Friday will see a nationwide cool-off, but the weekend and next week is set to experience similar heat.
