Australia weather: East coast to be lashed with hail storms

Parts of the country are going to be hit with snow-like hail for the rest of the week, after wild weather brought bizarre spring storms to Australia’s east coast.

More severe storms are set to roll in across Queensland’s southeastern corner, which was already hit by hail on Thursday afternoon.

Forecaster from the Bureau of Meteorology, Gabriel Branescu, said that the weather could be quite severe for the region.

‘We have storms forecast for the rest of the week, all the way to the weekend,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘They have a chance to be severe, with similar damaging wind gusts and hail in the area.’

Thursday afternoon’s storm hit parts of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, including Harlin, located 131 kilometres from Brisbane.

Although the storm has weakened, the threat of new thunderstorms continue right until Monday.

On Saturday, Mr Branescu said the most widespread set of storms will sweep south-eastern parts of Queensland.

‘Isolated cells may cause severe weather on Friday. In some parts you might see shower storms and some hail, and other parts nearby may miss out,’ he said.

The spring storms are due to ease up on Monday, but Mr Branescu said that this type of weather isn’t uncommon for the time of year.

‘We’re expecting busy days ahead,’ he said.

The storms follow a number of supercell systems that swept through the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas on Wednesday.

Residents of central and northern Gold Coast endured cracking thunder at about 11.30pm.

They woke to 48mm of rain, and heavy snow-like hail blanketed the streets and gardens, The Courier Mail reported.

Severe storm warnings remain in place for south-east Queensland and northern parts of NSW, as some areas are urged to prepare for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain.

The weather comes just a day after Sydney was also hit with hail and lightening on Wednesday.

Residents in the city’s north-west were shocked to discover their backyards covered in ice, which also blanketed cars, roofs and even trampolines.

Pictures and videos shared to social media show properties and streets covered in what initially appears to be snow.

‘As we got into Spring, we get these warm days, these cold days, these dry days. It’s not really a settled pattern,’ Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott told Daily Mail Australia.

Ms Westcott said the hail wasn’t uncommon as it can hit at anytime of the year, but she drew attention to Sydney’s changing weather conditions.
