Australia will hit a major Covid milestone today as the country moves towards ending all state border closures and re-opening to the world.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt confirmed the country will surpass 90 per cent first dose vaccination rates in what he is labelling ‘milestone day’.

‘During the course of today, we will pass 90 per cent first vaccinations across the country,’ he said on Thursday morning.

‘About 1pm in a country general practice, in an Indigenous medical clinic or a suburban pharmacy, someone will be the Australian who ticks us over 90 per cent of 16 plus who have a vaccination.’

Australia has achieved the feat in just nine months, with the first vaccine doses arriving in February.

More than 37 million jabs have been administered since then, with more to come in Queensland and Western Australia which are lagging behind the rest of the country.

‘What this means is we have been protecting Australians. And that’s an extraordinary achievement and I want to thank and honour all those who have attributed,’ Mr Hunt said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the milestone was a ‘true Australian national effort’.

‘Australians haven’t just kept themselves safe, we’ve kept each other safe over these two years,’ he said.

‘And I know it has felt like a long journey. That’s because it has been. But together we’ve saved well over 30,000 lives.’

NSW hit 90 per cent vaccinated on Wednesday, with Victoria on track to meet the same target within weeks.

‘We are hopeful that we can get that rate up to 95 per cent — that will not just be nation-leading, it will be world-leading as well,’ NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said.

Australia on the whole is moving in the right path for 90 per cent of the total population to be vaccinated with increased supply of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The country continues to manufacture the AstraZeneca jab, but has started shipping the vaccines to third world countries in the Pacific.
