An Australian backpacker has allegedly been raped while holidaying in a popular Croatian beach town.
The 23-year-old woman told local police the sexual assault happened on the beach at Makarska, located on the country’s Dalmatian coast, in the early hours of Monday morning.
Croatian Police said she arrived at the emergency department of the local hospital at 2:30am following the alleged assault.

A statement, also issued by police, said the woman was only able to provide vague details about her attacker as she was under the influence of alcohol.
It is believed the alleged attacker was an unknown man.
Known for its vibrant nightlife and idyllic beaches, Makarska sits as part of the larger Makarska Riviera between the tourist hot-spots of Split and Dubrovnik.
In recent years it has also become a favourite with sun-seeking Australian backpackers, marking its place on the route of Sail Croatia’s voyages.
