Australian dentist on the truth about dental veneers

The dentist who fitted veneers on make up queen Loz Curtis and Big Brother star Tully Smyth has revealed the key to crafting perfect pearly whites.

Dr Angelo Lazaris, a Sydney dentist and expert in fitting veneers, says the procedure is favoured by people with decayed or heavily eroded teeth wanting a sparkling new set.

Speaking with FEMAIL, Dr Angelo debunked the myth that dentists need to shave down a significant portion of the teeth, and said it is almost like a set of false nails for your mouth.

The 24-year-old admitted to having composite veneers for years before switching to porcelain, a procedure which places thin white shells over the real teeth to create perfectly straight pearly whites

‘The most rigorous adaption people with veneers go through is getting used to actually having a pretty smile,’ Dr Angelo said.

A common misconception surrounding veneers is the idea veneers can be an alternative to adult braces, however Dr Angelo warns it is not suitable for misaligned teeth.

‘It’s a completely different treatment to adult braces or even whitening. Veneers change the shape of damaged or cracked teeth and makes them fuller and bigger.’

YouTube star Loz Curtis opened up about the dental veneers she received from Dr Angelo which she says ‘transformed her life’.

She says her confidence has skyrocketed since her dentist straightened and whitened her slightly crooked and yellowed teeth – but she is not the first celebrity to rave about veneers.

‘I had braces in high school and while they aligned my teeth properly they still didn’t look how I wanted them to. Not to mention I had decay in between my two front teeth that I kept having to get fixed by other dentists that always eventually came back,’ Loz explained on her Instagram.

The YouTube star says she started off with reversible veneers and then moved to permanent and irreversible porcelain ones after realising how drastically different her teeth looked after.

‘I was so excited because my smile looked a million times better already, and if I ever did change my mind, the composites were completely reversible,’ Loz said.

‘Fast forward a few years and I knew I loved the way my smile looked and wanted to commit to porcelain veneers (much tougher but irreversible, although he only shaves the tiniest amount of your natural teeth down), and voila! A smile I could only ever dream of.’

Dr Angelo, a smile designer to the stars, also fixed the teeth of Big Brother star Tully Smyth, 30, who previously gushed about his work online.

‘For so long my buck teeth made me self conscious about smiling. I’d do this weird thing where I bit my bottom lip or tried to smirk instead of opening my mouth,’ Tully said.

‘Now that they’re straight (thanks to Dr Angelo Lazaris) and white, smiling selfies are my new thing.’

Porcelain veneers are made of wafer-thin tooth-like material which are placed over discolored, worn, chipped or broken natural teeth.

Costs for procedures vary but can cost from $1200 to $3000 at Dr Angelo’s office in Sydney’s CBD.

Adapting to veneers can be a quick and painless process, and Dr Angelo says the hardest adjustment can be psychological.

‘There are virtually no physical side effects but if someone has always hid their smile or felt self conscious it can take months to feel psychologically ready to show your teeth to the world again.’

Veneers have an average survival rate of up to 10 years before cracks begin to show.
