An Australian man has been arrested after his Thai girlfriend plunged to her death from her high-rise apartment.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody after Wilawal Poolsukserm, 28, fell from a building in Pattaya, Thailand, on Monday.

He was seen sitting next to Ms Poolsukserm on the road and holding her hand while paramedics desperately tried to revive her.

Ms Poolsukserm fell from the fifth floor balcony of Mint Mansion in Tambon Nong Plue, Bang Lamung district at 2.30am.

She died while being taken to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital, The Nation reported. 

A witness said he saw the young woman and heard the loud bang as she hit the ground in Pattaya, two hours east of Bangkok.

The Australian man was held and questioned after Ms Poolsukserm fell to her death.

Police held the man as to determine whether her death was suicide.
