Australian man thrown in Bali prison after dogs ‘urinated in cafe’

An Australian man has been thrown into a Balinese prison after his dogs urinated in a cafe and he allegedly punched the cafe owner’s father in the face.

Michael David Sode, who currently lives in Bali and lists his occupation as a consultant, faces a possible charge of assault and a maximum sentence of two years and eight months in jail if found guilty.

The 47-year-old Aussie expatriate was arrested on Saturday, several weeks after the fracas that allegedly broke out when several of his six unrestrained dogs started urinating on chairs at the Warung Coconut in Ubud.

In a statement to police, the victim Made Wena claimed he’d visited his son’s warung – the local term for cafe or restaurant – at about 10:30am on July 6, the Herald Sun reports.

Moments after Mr Wena sat down, three of Sode’s dogs reportedly arrived and started ‘peeing on the chairs’.

‘I tried to talk to the dog’s owner… [whose] his nickname is Michael, a foreigner living in Mas Village, Ubud subdistrict,’ he said.

‘I told Michael that his dogs were often peeing on my warung chairs… he said, ‘oh, the solution is easy, just spray cleaner fluid’.’

Three more dogs entered the warung during this exchange, Mr Wena claimed – some of them urinating on coconuts that were used for drinks, and one urinating on his seat.

When Mr Wena picked up the chair to hit the dog, Sode allegedly attacked him: striking him in the right side of his mouth and causing an injury that would ultimately require three stitches.

Mr Wena promptly reported the incident to Ubud police station.

Ubud police chief, Commissioner Made Raka Sugita, said that Sode’s arrest had been delayed for several weeks while police waited to receive the results of Mr Wena’s physical examinations.

Police in Ubud will hold a press conference on Wednesday regarding the case.
