The Royal Australian Mint has produced special edition AC/DC 50-cent and $5 coins in honour of the legendary Australian rock band’s 45th anniversary.

The 30,000 AC/DC 50-cent coins and 10,000 $5 coins will not be circulated but will be available online. 

The special edition 50-cent coin costs $15 while one $5 coin costs $130.

‘Unrelenting, frank, and at times irreverent, the electrifying music of Australia’s premier rock band AC/DC turns 45 in 2018,’ the Royal Australian Mint said in a statement on its website.

‘Turning the volume up on our numismatic tribute to AC/DC we have inverted the triangular black and present this intricate design oriented like a guitar pick’.

‘Nickel plated black and featuring the high voltage logos in vibrant colour print, this is a must have piece for fans of the band or collectors alike.’

The AC/DC rock band was formed in Sydney in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. They released their first album, High Voltage, in 1975. 

The band’s original members were vocalist Dave Evans, bassist Larry Van Kriedt, drummer Colin Burgess, lead guitarist Angus Young and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young.

Their biggest song worldwide was Highway to Hell, which hit number 17 in the United States and number eight in the United Kingdom.

Other successful albums included Back in Black and For Those About to Rock We Salute You.

AC/DC sold more than 200 million records worldwide and has cemented a reputation as one of the most influential rock bands of all time.

The coins are a tribute to the musicians that defined the rock n’ roll music scene and will be officially licensed as AC/DC merchandise.
