Australian mum-of-three reveals her top money saving tips

An Australian mother-of-three has revealed her top tips to save money while shopping for groceries.

Columnist Jo Abi lost her family home, her car and all of her life savings during the global financial crisis in 2007.

Speaking to A Current Affair on Monday night, the mum-of-three said she became a ‘savvy shopper out of necessity’.

‘It’s important to me to stretch every single dollar as far as it can go,’ she said.

Mrs Abi revealed she always shops at more than one supermarket and will often go to a fresh food market as well.

As well as shopping around, the savvy mum also suggested families shop the supermarket catalogues.

Like most families, Mrs Abi often shops with her children but warned parents to try and shop without little ones around.

‘As soon as you’ve left your house without your kids you’ve saved yourself at least $50,’ she said.

Buying fresh produce only when it’s in season will also save your wallet, and Mrs Abi suggests buying what on special over what isn’t.

If you’re doing a fresh produce shop, check out local farmers markets around closing time, the columnist said.

‘They don’t want to carry all that stuff home so go with $20 and you’ll come home with a box of fresh fruit.’

Avoid shopping while hungry and be sure to plan family meals before you go shopping.

‘Monday and Wednesday nights are pasta, Tuesday and Thursday are chicken dishes, Friday can be pizza and then we’ll do one night of takeaway and one night of something else, like tacos,’ Mrs Abi said.

While it may not work for some families, Mrs Abi does one big grocery shop every fortnight, with one small ‘top up’ in between.
