  • Other parents slammed her for filling her trolley with ‘rubbish’ and ‘junk’ food
  • They advised she buy own-brand products or switch to cheaper shops like ALDI
  • ‘You whinge how much your shopping cost, you don’t need that much junk!’

An Australian mum-of-five was horrified to see her grocery bill increase from $300 to $650 which she blames on inflation and the ‘cost of living crisis’, however not everyone agrees.

‘Who else is struggling with the high cost of living? We used to get our grocery every week for $300 or so, and now it’s doubled,’ the mum wrote on TikTok.

Her final shop came to $652.84 and included eight litres of juice, four litres of milk, two litres of chocolate milk, three tubes of Pringles, three boxes of cereal including Fruit Loops and four packets of chips.

It also included a Smarties bar, hygiene products like deodorant, body wash, baby wipes, sanitary products, toothpaste and cleaning products such as dishwashing liquid, toilet cleaner, toilet brush and cleaning spray.

Parents and shoppers were not sympathetic to the mum's plight, and  slammed her in the comments for filling her trolley with 'junk'

An Australian mum uploaded a video of her shock at the price of her Woolworths shop doubling, which she blamed on the cost of living crisis. Parents and shoppers were not sympathetic to the mum’s plight, and slammed her in the comments for filling her trolley with ‘junk’

Many parents came for her in the comments, accusing the mum of filling her trolley with ‘rubbish’ and advising her to buy own branded products or shop in ALDI instead.

‘You whinge how much your shopping cost, you don’t need that much junk!’

‘I see a lot of rubbish on that conveyer belt,’ one woman wrote.

‘”Struggling with money” yet still buys all the big brand stuff, just buy Woolies brand and save 30 per cent,’ another advised.

‘Ditch the juice, chocolate milk, fruit loops for a start!’ a shopper suggested.

‘We spend half that on a family of eight,’ another wrote.

The mum defended her shopping choices for her family of seven: ‘You guys, I’m not fat, or a bad mother, or anything like you making me feel. I swear to God my fridge is full of vegetables and fruits.’

The cost of living crisis and how to manage it:

* Inflation has risen by 7.3 per cent between September 2021-2022 in Australia

* 64 per cent of Australians admit they are anxious about the cost of living

* Grocery shopping is quickly become a massive expense for families in 2022

* According to ABS the price of vegetables has rise by 6.6 per cent, whilst fruit rose by 4.9 per cent and meat and seafood rose by 4.8 per cent. The overall cost of the basic food groups has risen by 2.0 per cent

How to save money on your grocery bill:

* Order online – experts believe you could save up to $1,360 per year by ordering online

* Subscribe to a meal kit service – meal kits provide a easy way to stick strictly to a budget, but they’re more suited to couples and single people

* Buy locally and in-season – seasonal Australian veggies are much cheaper than imported ones, likewise meat can be cheap at your local butcher

The mum defended her choices and hit back at those who made her feel ‘fat’ and like a ‘bad mother’.

She said she buys her greens from a green grocer, meat from a Lebanese butcher, and buys snacks on half price.

She then uploaded a follow-up video explaining that she had been to ALDI just three days before her Woolies shop and spent $300 for half the amount of food: ‘It’s the same thing.’

The mum has since uploaded another video showing her large food haul from Costco that came to a hefty $1,512, as well as a $507 clothes haul for her kids.

‘I’m crying my eyes out,’ the mum said about the cost of the shopping.

In her latest shopping haul video the mum shared herself picking up two $12 tubs of Nutella, a box of Nutella bars, 30 cans of Diet Coke, as well as a ten-pack of Kirks passionfruit juice, and a ten-pack of their creaming soda, two packets of chips, three packs of chocolate, as well as toiletries like shampoo and kitchen essentials like cling-wrap and sandwich bags.
