Australian rookie punter Michael Dickson has continued to amaze the NFL by introducing a drop kick to America’s most popular sport.

The 22-year-old, who grew up in Sydney, Australia, stunned the crowd at Chicago’s Soldier Field and an audience of 10 million American TV viewers on the Monday Night Football broadcast when he was called on to perform drop kick kick-offs.

ESPN commentators Joe Tessitore and Jason Witten were left scratching their heads watching the Sutherland Shire-raised Dickson.

It is rare to see a drop kick in an NFL game, it is typically used in rugby union games.

‘A drop kick kick-off?’ Tessitore asked.

‘We are going to send our stat folks into overdrive here, but I’m going to put it out there.

‘You tell me the last time you ever saw a drop kick kick-off in the NFL?’

Seahawks’ 19-season veteran kicker Sebastian Janikowski usually kicks off and uses a tee, but Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is known for using non-traditional methods and gambled with Dickson’s rugby method.

Dickson’s first went deep into the Bears’ territory.

With just 14 seconds to go in the game and the Seahawks needing a touchdown to tie, the Australian attempted a short drop kick hoping his team would recover.

However, it was a dirty night for the Seahawks, with the Bears winning 24-17.

Mr Dickson stole the show during his regular season debut with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night against the Denver Broncos thanks to his freakish right foot.

Mr Dickson created a buzz preseason but as soon as he dropped his first punt on Sunday his full ability was realised-winning himself a legion of new fans.

Dickson, punted six times during the game, with one reaching an incredible 69 yards.

Despite Dickson still losing to the Denver Broncos 27-24, Seahawks’ head coach Pete Carroll praised his first game.

Social media went into meltdown, ignoring some the game’s biggest stars and instead focusing on the Aussie newcomer.

‘The lead is nice and all, but these touchdowns are costing me chances to see Michael Dickson punt,’  one viewer tweeted, wanting some of the biggest stars to make way for the rookie.

‘Seahawks punter Michael Dickson is a monster,’ another tweeted after witnessing the star-making game.

One user even went as far as saying he was the new best player in the NFL.

‘Russel Wilson got the ball to the best player in the NFL,’ another said.

Dickson started out his career in soccer before switching to Australian football at the age of 12.

He was a Sydney Swans prospective before moving to Melbourne to trial with Prokick Australia where he was eventually picked up by the University of Texas as a punter.

Dickson will next play against the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.
