A young Australian rugby player has died in Bali after going into septic shock while recovering from surgery.

Will Thurston, 27, from the NSW Central Coast had a pancreatic abscess which required urgent surgery.

He was rushed to a local hospital but his devastated family revealed he died on February 16 after his condition deteriorated in the intensive care unit following the operation.

‘Whilst there is nothing that can ease the pain of Will’s passing. It is clear how much love surrounds Will with the overwhelming amount of support shown,’ his family said.

Septic shock happens when an infection spreads throughout the body and leads to dangerously low blood pressure.

It’s the most severe stage of sepsis, which occurs when the body has an extreme response to an infection.

Family member Ashlee Maree said they are working to give Will ‘the send off the deserves’.

‘Our beloved Will fought a courageous fight until the very end,’ she said.
